At least 60 debaters and adjudicators from all over the Philippines participated in the first installment of Salingoy: Santiago Ortega Cup, hosted by the Anthonian Debate Union last April 26 to 28, 2024.
Held at the University Forum and Annex Building,the first ever debate cup was initiated by Anthonian Debate Union, comprised of three organizations namely Anthonian Debate League, Anthonian Debate Circle (ADC), and The Piethos: Shrewd Anthonians for Advertency.
Sean Allain Vidal, prime minister of ADC said hosting the tournament came from the collective goal of all debate organizations of the University of Saint Anthony to launch the first ever regional tournament under the name and glory of the late Dr. Santiago G. Ortega.
It was as fulfilling as ever because they were able to achieve their goal, which was to raise the excellence that the Anthonian debating field has to offer, Vidal added.
Furthermore, debaters and adjudicators from USANT clinched awards in the said event.
John Ashton Javier and Dave Christopher Oliva secured second place as Grand Finalists of Ortega Cup. Additionally, Javier earned the title of 5th Best Novice Speaker.
Francis Cenon Elevado and Nikailla Chelsea Sarmiento nabbed the second-breaking team in the Open Cup Category. Elevado secured the 5th Best Open Speaker and Sarmiento received the 3rd Best Open Speaker.
Meanwhile, Marian Janel Palos emerged as the 7th Best Judge award, Mary Denise Abaño nabbed the 9th Best Judge award, and Freya Sophia Aquino received the 10th Best Judge award.
