Started by a group of middle and high school students in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, The Scrunchie Project is supporting the homeless community as our society struggles through the COVID-19 crisis.
In response to the rapidly increasing need for masks, the local organization Knit Crochet with Love began to produce fabric masks from unused donated cloth. As this necessary effort continued, we noticed that some of the unused scraps that were being discarded from the mask making could in fact be repurposed to make scrunchies! By buying our scrunchies, you are helping our society in two ways! Not only are you (1) supporting the homeless population as this public health crisis puts them in jeopardy but you are also (2) saving our environment by reducing the amount of cloth waste that goes into the landfill unused! Kudos to you!
The coronavirus pandemic has taken a huge toll on homeless communities around the world. As predicted, the virus spreads rapidly through homeless shelters, where most of the people are especially vulnerable to the disease. Inside these shelters, where dozens of people live in tight, packed quarters, social distancing is almost impossible to implement. Additionally, finding food has become increasingly tough during the pandemic, as many stores and restaurants have closed. You can watch the video below for a look into their lives.
While we can stay safe by holing up in our homes and minimizing contact with outsiders, this is not an option for homeless people. During these undoubtedly difficult times, we need to do all we can to help them. By buying our scrunchies, you can do your part to help those who are less fortunate.
