For the cake:
1 ½ cups of flour
1 teaspoon of baking powder
1 egg
1 cup of sugar
¼ cup of butter or margarine
1 cup of milk
Preheat the oven to 325°F and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish. Sift the flour and baking powder together. In another bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until fluffy. Add in the egg and beat again. Mix the flour and milk into the egg mixture, alternating between the two, until fully incorporated. Pour the batter into the baking dish.
For the sauce:
2 cups of water
2 cups of brown sugar
¼ cup of butter or margarine
¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract
Bring the water to a boil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the brown sugar, butter and vanilla, and return to a boil. Pour the sauce directly over the batter. Bake for 45 minutes, or until set.
