The Priest (2021) (Malayalam)

Mammootty is a superstar of Malayalam cinema and for good reason. His presence fills the screen every time he appears in it, with his charisma being more than evident, as much as his acting abilities, since he appears convincing in every kind of aspect his role demands here. He even manages to pull the mix of priest/detective/exorcist in a way that makes sense, for the most part at least. Nikhila Vimal as Jessie is also radiant with her evident beauty helping significantly in the presentation of the benevolent teacher with a secret character of hers, with her acting also being quite fitting in the role. Monica as Ameya Gabriel has her moments, particularly in the sinister elements of her character, but occasionally, it seems that she was asked to do much more than she could, in a rather demanding role that she still not has the level to fully fulfill.

On 12 January 2020, the first look poster shared on social media revealed that Mammootty plays a priest in the film and showed his character in a habit with his hood on and perusing what seems to be the Bible against the backdrop of a church.[14]

Fr. Carmen Benedict (Mammootty) is a priest as well as a detective who helps police in solving cases. While solving one such case, he comes across a mysterious girl Ameya (Monica) and tries to unravel the mystery behind her weird behaviour.

A Malayali Christian priest who doubles up as a talented detective is an intriguing starting point for a thriller. Like many famous fictional sleuths before him, Fr Carmen Benedict does not mind the police taking the credit for mysteries he solves, as a result of which they are happy to welcome him into their investigations.
