6th Grade Poetry

Our 6th Grade ELA students read The Tyger by William Blake and This is Just to Say by William Carlos Williams. They analyzed TONE and then had to create their own poems using these as inspiration but creating their own TONE towards the subject of their choice. Here were some of the amazing entries!

Animal Poems

The Rabbit

By Xavier B.

When I see you,

I begin to cry,

But they are not tears of distress,

But tears of happiness

Your fur, so smooth,

It seems to soothe,

As I wonder why,

I continue to cry

Your teeth, so sharp,

They could slice a tarp,

As I wonder why,

I continue to cry

Your eyes, so mysterious,

It makes me delirious,

As I wonder why,

I continue to cry

Oh rabbit divine,

I wish you were mine,

I’ll see you another time,

I must now say goodbye

Shark Encounter

By Jael B.

While I scuba dive,

In the ocean

Trying to survive

From a shark in motion

As it speeds,

While I stare in fright

It hunts me down

All through the night

With its sharp teeth,

And great sight

It can eat me whole

All in one bite

As I hop in my boat

I see the shark’s fin

Create ripples in the water

It shivers my skin

I make my escape

And land on a reef

As I walk on the landscape

I sigh in relief

Cheetah

Cheetah cheetah running fast

You will never be in last

Cheetah cheetah like the flash

Beating sonic in a dash

Cheetah cheetah yellow and black

You really do like to attack

Cheetah cheetah eating gazelles

Without letting them give their farewells

Cheetah Cheetah out in the city

I really want to give my pity

Cheetah Cheetah Giving chase

Always managing to keep the pace

Cheetah cheetah 80 miles an hour

Making people hide and cower

Cheetah cheetah I’d like to meet a

I might even name you Rita

Cheetah cheetah running fast

You will never be in last

Cheetah cheetah like the flash

Beating sonic in a dash

The Eagle

by Natalie Vincent

O’er the valley bright,

Wings wide as the pacific.

He sails seamlessly.

Nothing but a bird,

Yet more than man a many.

Only moral, live.

Symbol of freedom.

His spirit isn’t broken.

Peace and war as one.

No controversy.

Simple effective instincts.

As we all should be.

Not to sweep aside,

Like a toy long forgotten.

The eagle lives on.

Apology and/or Forgiveness Poems

What do you think?

by Nicole Acosta

I love you Gigi

But what do you think of me

Am I a crazy cookie

Do you not like my...PERSONALITY!?

What do you want me to do?

feed you?

play with you ?

let you out of the house?

Forgive me

But what can a girl do

When she has a dog like you

You may think i'm crazy

But I think you are too

I love you Gi Gi

But you are a crazy cookie

But what do you think of me

The Juicy Steak

By Jonah K.

To Mom

The juicy steak

Might have been eaten

With someone that may have been me

I’m very sorry

That this random old lady

Took the steak from me

That was a lie

She offered a pie

She’s your mother and my grandma

I’m sorry I ate it

I just had to taste it

It was so delicious and good

It was only a portion

No need for extortion

To lecture me out of my room

I understand

The money you spent

But I have to admit,

The steak was very good.

The Juicy Apology

To Jonah (mom hasn’t apologized yet)

The juicy steak

Was definitely eaten

By someone who was definitely you.

I know that you ate it

I just didn’t say it

Because I knew you were guilty too.

It tasted so great

And it tasted so good

I had a few pieces myself.

And yes I forgive you

And yes it wasn’t cheap

But I still love you.

Ode to Mami

By Angie O.

The way I hear her heartbeat when she hugs me.

The way I heat her feet in the winter when she gets cold.

Te amamos

Her skin, a soft blanket when she holds me tight.

The smell of Japanese cherry blossoms, warm and inviting.

Te amamos

Her words, a tapestry of good advice, always there when needed.

Her hair, long and brown, always getting tangled while playing together

Te amamos

The happy way you entered our lives

The happy way we feel

Te amamos

We love you

Sara

By Angie O.

Crying

When you came into this world, you were crying

This world was cold, but you had people ready to wrap you in a warm embrace.

Smiling

We were all smiles in that hospital room, on that fateful day when I held you for the first time and my life changed forever

Laughing

Laughter filled the room as we all talked about your cute little face and how beautiful you were

Crying

I cry today while writing this poem about you, remembering all of the good times we’ve had and the hopefully many to come

Love

I love you, Sara, always and forever
