Choosing Grade 10 subjects is one of the first major educational decisions your child will make.
For many parents, it can feel overwhelming.
Should my child choose Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy?
What subjects are even available?
What do the marks really mean?
What if they change their mind about their future career?
These are all normal questions.
The good news is this:
Your child does not need to know exactly what they want to do for the rest of their life.
Most adults didn't know at 14 or 15 years old either.
The purpose of choosing Grade 10 subjects is not to decide your child's entire future.
The purpose is to choose subjects that keep as many future opportunities open as possible while still allowing your child to succeed.
That balance matters.
Not too easy.
Not impossible.
The right fit.
Remember: choosing Grade 10 subjects does not lock your child into one career for life. It simply determines which doors remain open should they choose to walk through them later.
This article provides general guidance based on the current CAPS curriculum.
Subject availability differs between schools, and university admission requirements vary between institutions and programmes.
Always discuss subject choices with your child's teachers and check the latest admission requirements of any university or college your child may wish to attend.
Under the CAPS curriculum, learners study seven subjects.
There are four compulsory subjects:
Home Language
First Additional Language
Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy
Life Orientation
Learners then choose three additional subjects from those offered by their school.
These may include:
Physical Sciences
Life Sciences
Accounting
Business Studies
Economics
Geography
History
Information Technology (IT)
Computer Applications Technology (CAT)
Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD)
Visual Arts
Dramatic Arts
Music
Consumer Studies
Hospitality Studies
Tourism
Agricultural Sciences
Not every school offers every subject.
That is important.
Before becoming attached to a particular subject combination, ask your child's school:
"Which Grade 10 subjects are available at our school?"
For most families, this is the most important subject choice.
Many parents start by asking:
"Does my child enjoy Maths?"
That is not the best question.
Many learners don't enjoy Mathematics because it is challenging.
That does not automatically mean they cannot succeed.
Instead ask:
"Is my child capable of succeeding in Mathematics with consistent effort and appropriate support?"
If the answer is yes, Mathematics generally keeps the widest range of university courses and career options open. This doesn't mean every child should take Mathematics. It means parents should avoid closing future opportunities unless there is a good educational reason to do so.
Mathematics is required or strongly recommended for many university programmes and careers, including:
Engineering
Architecture
Computer Science
Information Technology
Artificial Intelligence
Data Science
Cybersecurity
Medicine
Pharmacy
Veterinary Science
Accounting
Finance
Actuarial Science
Many Commerce degrees
Some design-related degrees
Absolutely not.
Mathematical Literacy is not a "lesser" subject.
It is the right choice for many learners.
However, parents need to understand one important fact:
Mathematical Literacy may limit entry into university programmes that specifically require Mathematics.
That does not mean your child cannot have a successful career.
Many excellent careers and university programmes accept Mathematical Literacy.
It simply means some pathways may no longer be available.
There is no official CAPS rule that says:
"Above this mark, choose Mathematics."
"Below this mark, choose Mathematical Literacy."
No such national cut-off exists.
However, your child's marks provide useful information.
In South Africa, school reports often use achievement levels.
Achievement Level Percentage
Level 7 80–100%
Level 6 70–79%
Level 5 60–69%
Level 4 50–59%
Level 3 40–49%
Level 2 30–39%
Level 1 0–29%
Remember:
Achievement levels describe your child's current performance. They do not predict their future potential.
Many learners improve dramatically through better study habits, increased maturity and appropriate support.
Generally speaking:
Learners consistently achieving around Levels 6–7 are usually coping well with Mathematics.
Learners around Level 5 are often capable of continuing with Mathematics if they are prepared to work consistently.
Learners around Level 4 need careful discussion with their Mathematics teacher.
Learners below this level should not automatically move to Mathematical Literacy. Parents should first understand why the marks are low.
A low Mathematics mark can happen for many different reasons.
For example:
Poor study habits
Incomplete homework
Weak foundations from previous grades
Poor attendance
Lack of confidence
Test anxiety
Rushing assessments
Needing additional support
Genuine difficulty with abstract Mathematics
These are not the same problem.
A learner who is inconsistent may still succeed in Mathematics.
A learner who works consistently, receives support and still struggles may be better suited to Mathematical Literacy.
This is why teacher input is so valuable.
Ask your child's Mathematics teacher:
"Do you believe my child can realistically cope with Grade 10 Mathematics if they work consistently?"
The goal is not to choose the hardest subjects.
The goal is not to choose the easiest subjects.
The goal is:
Choose the most challenging subjects your child can realistically succeed in while keeping as many future opportunities open as possible.
That is the balance.
Physical Sciences is important for learners considering careers such as:
Engineering
Medicine
Pharmacy
Veterinary Science
Architecture
Aviation
Chemistry
Physics
Environmental Science
Many STEM careers
Parents should understand:
Physical Sciences is not "just another subject."
It is academically demanding and works best alongside Mathematics.
Life Sciences may support careers such as:
Medicine
Nursing
Psychology
Environmental Science
Agriculture
Veterinary Science
Biotechnology
However, many competitive health science degrees also require Mathematics and Physical Sciences.
Never assume Life Sciences alone is enough.
Always check university requirements.
These subjects suit learners interested in:
Business
Finance
Entrepreneurship
Accounting
Commerce
Economics
Management
Accounting develops financial understanding and analytical thinking.
Business Studies focuses on how businesses operate.
Economics explores how economies work.
Not every school offers Economics.
Many parents think these subjects are the same.
They are not.
Information Technology (IT) focuses on:
Programming
Coding
Software Development
Computational Thinking
It is often the better choice for learners interested in technology careers.
Computer Applications Technology (CAT) focuses on practical computer skills such as:
Word processing
Spreadsheets
Databases
Presentations
Information management
CAT is valuable.
But it does not replace IT for programming-related careers.
Both subjects develop valuable digital skills, but they prepare learners for different pathways.
Engineering Graphics and Design (EGD) supports careers such as:
Engineering
Architecture
Product Design
Technical Drawing
Industrial Design
Visual Arts supports careers such as:
Graphic Design
Illustration
Fine Art
Animation
Creative industries
For some architecture and interior design programmes, Mathematics remains important.
Creativity and technical skills often work best together.
Subjects such as:
History
Geography
Languages
Dramatic Arts
can support careers in:
Law
Education
Journalism
Communication
Psychology
Public Service
Research
Parents sometimes assume Mathematics and Science are the only "good" subjects.
They are not.
Every subject develops different thinking skills.
Artificial intelligence, automation and rapidly changing technology are reshaping almost every industry. Today's learners are likely to have several different careers during their lifetime, many in jobs that do not yet exist.
Instead of preparing children for one specific job, we should prepare them to:
Solve problems
Communicate well
Think critically
Adapt to change
Use technology responsibly
Continue learning throughout life
Every subject develops different ways of thinking.
Mathematics develops logical reasoning.
Science develops investigation and problem-solving.
Languages develop communication.
History develops analysis.
Accounting develops financial thinking.
IT develops computational thinking.
Arts develop creativity.
Ask yourself:
"What kind of thinker will this subject help my child become?"
That question may be just as important as:
"What career could this subject lead to?"
Don't panic.
Most Grade 9 learners are still discovering who they are.
For an academically capable learner who is undecided, one broad subject combination might include:
Mathematics
Physical Sciences
Life Sciences
IT or Accounting
But that is only one example.
A creative learner may thrive with Mathematics, EGD and Visual Arts.
A future entrepreneur may benefit from Mathematics, Accounting and Business Studies.
The best subject combination is always the one that suits your child.
Choosing subjects because friends are choosing them.
Choosing the easiest subjects without considering future opportunities.
Assuming today's career interests will never change.
Making decisions without speaking to teachers.
Believing one subject choice determines a child's entire future.
Before making your final decision, ask:
What subjects does the school offer?
What does my child's Mathematics teacher recommend?
Is my child working consistently?
Are low marks caused by effort, gaps in learning or genuine difficulty?
Which subjects match my child's strengths?
Which subjects keep the most future opportunities open?
Which subjects will my child realistically work hard at for the next three years?
Remember:
Subject choices are generally intended to continue through Grades 10, 11 and 12, although some schools allow changes early in Grade 10.
Choose carefully.
Our children are growing up in a world that is changing faster than any generation before them.
We cannot prepare children for one job anymore. We must prepare them to keep learning, adapt to change and take advantage of opportunities that do not yet exist.
That is what good subject choices should do.
