The Many Who Move Us — Recognition Library
By Craig Edmondson-Wood
In 2023, in Clarksville, Tennessee, a firefighter named Engineer-Paramedic Steven “Steve” Brady made a decision that would ripple far beyond the moment itself. According to reporting from WKRN News 2 (2023) and the Clarksville Fire Rescue Department, Brady responded to a house fire where a young child was trapped inside. Heavy smoke had already filled the home. Flames were spreading. Neighbors stood helpless on the lawn.
Brady didn’t hesitate.
He forced his way inside, crawling low through the smoke, searching room by room. Visibility was nearly zero. Heat was rising. But he kept going — guided only by instinct, training, and the belief that someone inside still needed him. When he found the child unconscious, he shielded them with his own body and carried them out through the flames.
The child survived.
Brady was hospitalized for smoke inhalation.
And the community never forgot.
In the weeks that followed, students from a nearby middle school — many of whom had seen the fire trucks that day — created handmade cards, posters, and a banner that read: “Thank you for running toward us.” They delivered them to the fire station, surprising Brady and his crew. Some of the kids said they wanted to be firefighters someday. Others simply wanted him to know he mattered.
It wasn’t a ceremony.
It wasn’t a fundraiser.
It was gratitude — pure, unfiltered, and powerful.
This is the movement.
This is the mission.
These are the many who move us.
