The Little Mermaid is a 2023 American musical romantic fantasy film directed by Rob Marshall from a screenplay written by David Magee. Co-produced by Walt Disney Pictures, DeLuca Marshall, and Marc Platt Productions, it is a live-action adaptation of Disney's 1989 animated film of the same name, which itself is loosely based on the 1837 fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. The film stars singer Halle Bailey in the title role, alongside Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malik, Javier Bardem and Melissa McCarthy. At Ursula's lair, Ariel is presented with a deal: she will turn into a human for three days, during which she must receive "true love's kiss" to remain human permanently. If Ariel fails, she will transform back into a mermaid and Ursula will claim her. To become human, Ariel must give up her tail, the ability to breathe underwater, and her siren voice, the last of which Ursula will keep in a nautilus shell. Ariel accepts the deal. After receiving human legs, she is taken to the surface by Sergeant Major Flounder, her best friend, and Sebastian. In the human world, she is rescued and taken to Eric's castle. Eric, who has been searching for the woman who saved his life, rushes to meet Ariel. However, her lack of voice has him immediately turning away, though he does allow Ariel to stay in the castle for as long as she wants. While exploring the castle, Ariel finds Eric's collection of items he accumulated over his travels. Eric spends time with her poring over his collection.

The next morning, Ariel and her friends discover that Eric will be announcing his engagement to "Vanessa" (Ursula's alter ego) later that day. Ariel rushes to the engagement party, confronts Ursula, and breaks the shell. She gains back her voice, and the enchantment on Eric is broken. However, before they can kiss, the sun sets and Ariel transforms back into a mermaid. Reverting to her original form, Ursula drags Ariel back into the ocean.

On May 19, 2023, Marshall revealed that his work on Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (which featured a mermaid character named Tamara) helped influence his work on The Little Mermaid, using similar live-action and CGI techniques to bring Ariel, her sisters and King Triton to life. He called it "a great launching point for us" and showed his work on Pirates to the crew and visual effects team to break down the process. The colorful tails of the merpeople characters were designed by Marshall's frequent costume designer Colleen Atwood, who used real fish as references to make each of the tails of Ariel and her sisters look more distinct from one another, and also designed the costumes for the human characters.[80]

On September 9, 2022, Rob Marshall and Halle Bailey appeared at the 2022 D23 Expo to introduce an exclusive presentation of the film's "Part of Your World" sequence, which received a positive response from the attendees, who praised Bailey's vocal performance. The film's teaser trailer was released to the public the same day.[109] On October 13, 2022, the first poster was released to the public,[110] which Bailey synchronously captioned on Twitter: "Words can't describe how immensely honored I feel to play the mermaid of my dreams."[111]

The brewer was so captivated by both the fairy tale and the ballet that he commissioned the sculptor Edvard Eriksen to create a sculpture of the mermaid.

Inspired by a ballerina

The sculpture was inspired by ballerina Ellen Price, who in 1909 danced the lead role in the ballet The Little Mermaid at the Royal Theatre.

The headless mermaid

This figure of ahandsome boy, carved in pure white marble, had sunk down to thebottom of the sea from some ship that was wrecked. Beside thestatue she planted a rose-colored weeping willow tree, whichthrived so well that its graceful branches shaded the statue andhung down to the blue sand, where their shadows took on a violettint, and swayed as the branches swayed. It looked as if theroots and the tips of the branches were kissing each other inplay.

Nothing gave the youngest princess such pleasureas to hear about the world of human beings up above them. Her oldgrandmother had to tell her all she knew about ships and cities,and of people and animals. To be sure, their light was quite dim, but looked atthrough the water they seemed much bigger than they appear to us.Whenever a cloud-like shadow swept across them, she knew that itwas either a whale swimming overhead, or a ship with many humanbeings aboard it. Little did they dream that a pretty youngmermaid was down below, stretching her white arms up toward thekeel of their ship.

The following year, her third sister ascended, andas she was the boldest of them all she swam up a broad river thatflowed into the ocean. She saw gloriously green, vine-coloredhills. Palaces and manor houses could be glimpsed through thesplendid woods. She heard all the birds sing, and the sun shoneso brightly that often she had to dive under the water to coolher burning face. In a small cove she found a whole school ofmortal children, paddling about in the water quite naked. Shewanted to play with them, but they took fright and ran away. Thenalong came a little black animal - it was a dog, but she hadnever seen a dog before. It barked at her so ferociously that shetook fright herself, and fled to the open sea. But never couldshe forget the splendid woods, the green hills, and the nicechildren who could swim in the water although they didn't wearfish tails.

On the evenings when the mermaids rose through thewater like this, arm in arm, their youngest sister stayed behindall alone, looking after them and wanting to weep. But a mermaidhas no tears, and therefore she suffers so much more.

"Now I'll have you off my hands," said hergrandmother, the old queen dowager. "Come, let me adorn you likeyour sisters." In the little maid's hair she put a wreath ofwhite lilies, each petal of which was formed from half of apearl. And the old queen let eight big oysters fasten themselvesto the princess's tail, as a sign of her high rank.

The little mermaid swam right up to the window ofthe main cabin, and each time she rose with the swell she couldpeep in through the clear glass panes at the crowd of brilliantlydressed people within. The handsomest of them all was a youngPrince with big dark eyes. He could not be more than sixteenyears old. It was his birthday and that was the reason for allthe celebration. Up on deck the sailors were dancing, and whenthe Prince appeared among them a hundred or more rockets flewthrough the air, making it as bright as day. These startled thelittle mermaid so badly that she ducked under the water. But shesoon peeped up again, and then it seemed as if all the stars inthe sky were falling around her. Never had she seen suchfireworks. Great suns spun around, splendid fire-fish floatedthrough the blue air, and all these things were mirrored in thecrystal clear sea.
