The team at Pettus / Farnsworth Law Firm uses determination, hard-earned knowledge, creative strategy and unbending tenacity, to get winning results for our people. Whether facing sudden, life-altering tragedies or the consequences of some seriously bad decisions; people in need are referred to us for serious help everyday.

In the new year, a focus emerges toward paring down our linens and other home textiles to just the essentials. We also can venture more freely indoors and out, bask in the light, and live with less. All these pleasures are encapsulated perfectly into the Farnsworth House by Mies Van der Rohe. This home is an iconic example of modern architecture that was built in 1951 along the banks of the Fox River in Plano, Illinois.

It was the summer home of Dr. Edith Farnsworth, a Chicago-based physician who made the trip each weekend from the City in order to decompress from the stresses of daily life. This glass home is a marvel. The way the house floats, the way the glass walls blend with the environment, and the absence of ornamentation creates an experience which is the closest thing we know to indoor camping.

Something also extraordinary about this home is the use of linens and home textiles, or more appropriately, the un-use of linens. Home textiles should follow the lead of the architecture and interior style of a home. In this home, the use of textiles is also minimal, favoring white bed linens and curtains so as to not distract in color from the ongoing seasonal tableaux from outside. This approach toward using just the essentials allows the home's architecture to remain the focal point of the interior experience.

White curtains around the perimeter of the home function as a moveable and flexible wall which adds to the wonderful fluidity of the interior experience. The fabric also adds some softness to the spaces, which counter balances the home's hard edges, use of steel, and minimalism.

Textiles in the home are the connections between the soft humanity of people and the hard materials and spaces created by architecture. The two need each other, even in spaces such as the Farnsworth House, where although the home textiles play a secondary role, they are essential.

5. The steel-and-glass house located in Plano, IL, is one of only three van der Rohe houses in the US. Like the Farnsworth, the other homes invite nature inside via continuous glass walls that are anchored directly to their wooden floors. The other two van der Rohe designs, the Robert McCormick house in Elmhurst, IL (now incorporated in the Elmhurst Art Museum) and the Morris Greenwald house, located in Weston, CT, are both beautiful examples of Mid-Century Modern architecture.

Find more (yes, more!) about Mies van der Rohe and The Farnsworth House on our model description page. For a model of one of the most iconic homes in America (or anywhere, really), the building process is fairly straightforward. Detailed instructions and easy-to-follow diagrams make completing your own masterpiece a real pleasure.

In 1972, the Edith Farnsworth House was purchased by British property magnate, art collector, and architectural aficionado Peter Palumbo.[12] He removed the bronze screen enclosure of the porch, added air conditioning, electric heat, extensive landscaping, and his art collections to the grounds, including sculptures by Andy Goldsworthy, Anthony Caro, and Richard Serra. At the time, the interior was furnished with furniture Mies designed in the 1930s, but produced more recently by Knoll, as well as designs by Mies' grandson, Dirk Lohan, a Chicago architect Palumbo commissioned specifically for the house.[13]

In January 2019, writer-director Richard Press and HanWay Films announced an upcoming Farnsworth House film project starring Elizabeth Debicki[35] as Dr. Edith Farnsworth and Ralph Fiennes as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe.[36]

Thanks. This is an update. I have not posted it but I have fixed the sun shadow problem and the flat glass one. Curtains are in the todo but they are often not in pictures of the original but sometimes they are and they do look better. Curtains are also a lot of work and hard on the cpu. I have played with the grass but as of yet, I have not found a good way to do the grass without overloading my computer and spending ages rendering it. I guess I could use the grass pack from Mr. Price.

Hi, good job!

Have a look at the rendering of Farnsworth House by Allesandro Prodan - it is a great source of inspiration:

"They did an amazing job, with the heat," Farnsworth said. "They worked extremely hard to make sure the children were out of the house and try to stop the fire from advancing to any additional houses. It's absolutely a team effort."

While I always find myself standing for a long time in front of Zorach's paintings, and this one, Land and Development of New England, was no exception, there was something especially tactile and energetic about the hooked rug, Eden, that made it hard to walk away from at all. I think my husband was amused, without fully understanding, that I would have camped out in front of Eden for hours had it been possible. I admire and am grateful to the family who donated it to the Farnsworth so that the public could enjoy this remarkable piece of textile art. If anyone ever questioned that the technique of traditional rug hooking could yield fine art, Marguerite Zorach's work puts that question definitively to rest. I often tell my students not to allow any limitations on their imagination when it comes to developing their technique and style. The notion of treating rug hooking as though it should have limitations in the form of hard and fast rules or rigid genres is shattered when one encounters a piece like Eden, or, for that matter, much of the work being done by contemporary hooking artists all over the world.

I remember the moment we first saw our house. We parked under the beautiful maple tree at the curb and as we walked on to the front porch a feeling came over me that we were home. The neighborhood is charming, alleys run through the middle of every block, and our elementary school is only a block down the street. Our home was built in 1905, as a duplex. Once we bought it, we were able to offset our payment by renting out half of the home. It has gone through several renovations over the years, each side in different styles.

After living in the home for a while we started making it our own and turning it from a duplex into a single family home. I love the tall windows, the solid doors, the old wood floors and the brick interior walls. I love that there are huge Victorian mansions on the same block as the smallest cottages. On Sunday mornings we wake up to the ringing bells of three churches.

Our schools are all within walking distance, which makes it possible for the kids to participate in extra activities. The elementary school is a block away, we homeschool them during middle school, but the high school is about eight blocks from our front door to theirs.

One of the perks of older homes is definitely having a generous front porch. It spans the front of our house and is an extension of our living space. We have a couple of springy chairs and an old wooden trunk to hide all kinds of play paraphernalia, skates, mitts, and balls. We watch the world go by from our front porch.

The last best thing about our home is the secret stairway/clubhouse. When we began combining the duplex into one home we closed off one of the stairways and it has become the stuff of heady dreams. Every time we have visitors they beg to play on the secret stairs.

For those of you who have dreams and feel torn by all that is expected of you, try to remember that the merry-go-round of motherhood does slow down. Enjoy the ride if you can. Be the mother that they need and you will look back and enjoy remembering the days of mothering young children. And you will be able to help them leave your home with enough love tucked in their pocket to last until they figure things out for themselves.

It is hardest for girls, I am convinced but our boys thrived at home and were just as ready to get back to regular school. Girls get so many conflicting messages from everyone it is nice to just let them be innocent children for a while longer. There is time enough later to tackle the tough stuff. My humble opinion!

Each one gets easier and makes everything harder at the same time, but it is all worth it and is a gift to the other children. I think it tells the older ones how much you love them when you want another. But that might just be me!

I have read Design M for nine years and really enjoy the home tours, but yours has been my favorite, ever, hands down times ten. Thank you so much for sharing your home, love, and wisdom!! Also, I love to read and will check out your book. ff782bc1db
