WHILE Bruce Wayne is well known for his habit of taking in Gotham's stray and needy children, very rarely has he ever been called "dad". When interviewed, his children will often note that he is, in fact, a parental figure to them, however they don't feel the need to label him as "dad". According to the majority of the Wayne children, the fact that they don't call him dad doesn't make him any less of one.
"I don't need to call Bruce 'Dad' for him to know that I love him like one," Duke Thomas once said when the Gotham Gazette caught him after school one day, "he understands that I'm never gonna call him dad even if for all intents and purposes he is my dad. I think a lot of kids in the foster system get pressured to call their adoptive parents 'Mom' or 'Dad' because we get told that's what we're supposed to do. However, not calling your parents mom or dad doesn't make them any less of your parents. To me, calling Bruce 'Bruce' is the same thing as calling him 'dad'."
It is absolutely true that there is no obligation for Mr. Wayne's many children to call him dad. However, Bruce Wayne has been caught saying that he quite enjoys it when his kids do give him the moniker. "I have to admit, it's always a treat when one of my kids calls me 'dad'. Even Damian calling me 'Father', while a bit overly polite, gives me a little tingle every now and then."
So it's no wonder that when Mr. Wayne's newest son, one Daniel Wayne, called him Baba on the phone during a press conference, he melted. That's right, dear readers. Today, September 20th, Mr. Wayne took a phone call from one of his children during a press conference announcing Wayne Enterprises' newest venture into renewable energy efforts.
The press conference itself had been going smoothly. Mr. Wayne answered reporter's questions expertly as he explained Wayne Enterprises' efforts to finding a more sustainable way to power Gotham. However, as he was taking the last round of questions, Mr. Wayne received a phone call. It's well known that Mr. Wayne will often step out of press conferences if one of his children is calling him, so when he made a move to leave the area, reporters knew that this call had to be one of his children.
Of course, in a move that only Brucie Wayne could accomplish, Mr. Wayne pressed the answer and speaker phone button just as he greeted his youngest child, Daniel Wayne. Pictured to the right is Mr. Wayne's face as he realized just what had occurred.
The room grew silent as Daniel Wayne's voice crackled over the microphone. The conversation seemed to be a fairly normal one, Daniel simply asking Mr. Wayne about dinner plans that night and if he could invite a friend over. The reporters were about to file this interaction as a simple slip of the thumb and a funny anecdote. However, as Mr. Wayne and Daniel Wayne exchanged their goodbyes, we were given a most wonderful treat.
As you can hear here, Daniel Wayne was heard saying, "Love you too, Baba." Those gathered for the press conference watched as Bruce Wayne's face melted in affection and shock. This clearly is not a regular occurrence at the Wayne household.
While Mr. Wayne valiantly tried to return the conversation to Wayne Enterprises' newest venture, the rest of the press conference was spent asking about Mr. Wayne's relationship with his son. Mr. Wayne seemed flustered by the sudden change of topic, but he managed to respond well enough.
"This is a new development for all of us," Bruce said when asked about the, frankly, adorable nickname, "Danny's just gotten to a point where he feels safe at home. I do not expect him to call me Dad or Baba with any sort of regularity. If Danny wishes to call me Baba, then I will not discourage him. However, I ask that others please respect his position and do not pressure him into it."
Andrew Harper, a writer for Gotham Today, had this to say on the subject: "I think it's a bit inappropriate. I mean, what a childish thing to call your dad. If he was going to call Bruce anything then he should have just called him 'dad' or stuck with his name. The kid's already 15, right? That's too old to be calling your dad anything as kiddy as 'baba'. It's almost as bad as if he'd called the man 'daddy'."
Mr. Harper's opinion was clearly not shared as Lois Lane, one of the most prolific journalists at the Daily Planet, was quick to interrupt him. "I think it's quite sweet that he's gotten comfortable enough to call him 'baba'," Lois said, "both Damian and Danny have been quite open about being Arab. It's a lot more common to use 'baba' as a term of endearment for fathers in Arabic. Danny choosing to call Mr. Wayne 'Baba' just shows that Mr. Wayne is doing his duty in keeping his children connected to their cultures of origin."
Of course, it is not our job at the Gotham Gazette to give our opinions on these matters. We are here to report the straight facts of a situation. If you asked this writer, however, it seems prudent to say that we at the Gotham Gazette have nothing but love for both Bruce Wayne and Daniel Wayne. We hope that Daniel continues to grow more comfortable in his new family.

However, for now, we leave our readers with the gooey feeling of realizing that Gotham's darling, Bruce Wayne, now has a new title to add to his already impressive list: Baba.
