Clay is a natural, non-toxic, absorbent medium that has been a part of civilization for thousands of years. Artists are able to express their artistic vision on a clay canvas, and also remain very functional pieces of art. Clay is made from the earth and is like a blank canvas. Whether used for drawing, painting, creating beautiful beads for jewelry or sculpture it conveys the artist’s vision. Materials can be organic or synthetic; plain or decorated; smooth or rough. Clay refers to any of a range of plastic materials that retain some plasticity when mixed with water, and then pushed, pulled, rolled, pinched, and prodded into physical form and fired in a kiln to a temperature at which the water and organic material contained in the clay are driven off.
