Came across a Black Book and either tried to use it or failed to destroy it, sources vary on the actual telling.
According to the Wanderers' tradition, he did use a Black Book, believed to belong to Dagon, Lord of the Deep/a "drowned god".
A running theory was that sinking the capital city was a mass sacrifice to release Dagon.
The Wanderer at the time, Ecelnara, lost her husband who was a captain in the king's guard. She's believed to be the source of the rumor.

In the High Forest, Arix and Orestes found an ancient scroll in a half-buried chest with a tree growing out of it that said "Long live the Great King Phylandron, Overlord of the Elves of Toril. Long may he reign."
Before his death, the Traveler claimed to have met the king in person a time or two. It's currently uncertain if the king was a willing participant or not.
