Mission

White educators creating diverse, equitable, and empowering classrooms where all students know that they belong.

The Collaborative is a space for teachers who work with middle school age students (ages 10 - 14) and who identify as white to:

1. Workshop Lesson Plans

2. Empower Students

3. Question & Navigate Existing Structures of Power

Actionable Outcomes

Create or reimagine then critique, reflect, and revise until you leave with a lesson or unit you are confident will embody the skills, perspectives, and voices necessary for your students to thrive. Beyond the lessons, we will discuss how to be catalysts for systemic change in our schools.

Please do not expect easy fixes or stand alone solutions. While suggested frameworks and approaches will be provided, we're confident that you bring valuable insight to this work. Whether you have been actively practicing equitable pedagogy for years or are a first year teacher, please come ready to share, lead, question - COLLABORATE!

Schedule

Our time together will be spread out over the course of four days. Each day will involve approximately 2 hours of synchronous work via Zoom. Beyond that, participants are encouraged to connect synchronously or asynchronously to maximize actionable outcomes. Each of the collective synchronous meetings will begin at 10:30am EST on the following dates:

Monday, August 23

Tuesday, August 24

Wednesday, August 25

Thursday, August 26

Participants will need access to Zoom and Google Drive.

Using a cohort model, we are hoping to have participants reconvene again in the winter and spring. Dates TBD.

Effort 1: Creating a Safe Space.

Whether on campus or working remotely, we need to start by ensuring our classrooms are safe for every student. How can we do that?

Effort 2: Walking the Talk.

Collaborate to move your classroom from a safe space to a brave space. Create lesson plans that will uplift, validate, and equip all students.

Effort 3: Walking the Talk (continued).

Using a protocol-based platform, we will critique and revise our units / lessons.

Effort 4: Next Steps - Extending Beyond Classrooms and Lessons.

How to empower student voice & choice in your school.

How to help your friends and colleagues outside of The Collaborative.
