1. Lily's Kitchen Adult Chicken and Duck Complete Dry Dog Food, 7 kg

Just like we did with their lovely wet canned food, we've tried the equivalent of Lily Dry Kitchen in dry food: chicken and duck flavor. We'll let you know right away that Lily's Kitchen's full nutrition dry dog food uses natural ingredients that exactly reflect the ingredient label. What exactly does this mean? It means that this food contains no artificial preservatives, colorants or sweeteners. On top of that, this material contains no grains or meat foods, which means it contains no non-valuable parts of the meat source, such as heads, hooves, etc. This food meets many requirements when it comes to being the best dry dog food on the market.

This food is highly nutritious and is a fantastic companion to any moist food you choose. The pieces are small enough for most dogs to eat without any problems. Because the ingredients are natural, with no grains and no artificial additives, it means it's easy for dogs and you won't have to worry about any allergic reactions whatsoever. Lily's Kitchen may be a more commercial brand these days and appear in most conventional supermarkets, but that doesn't mean the croquette they make is less than excellent.

In short, just like your wet food offered by Lily's Kitchen dry dog food croquette is of excellent quality, which is packed with all the nutrition you want your dog to have and very tasty. Jeff had no trouble eating these things and the price isn't that bad. A highly recommended brand of dry dog food.

Lily’s Kitchen Complete Dry Dog Food Ingredients

2. Arden Grange Adult with Fresh Lamb and Rice, 12 kg

Arden Grange's dry dog food is simply one of the healthiest and most professional dry kibbles you can get for your dog. They have more than one flavor available, but the one we received to taste was lamb and rice. Lamb meat is obtained from pasture fed lamb for those who care about the animal's welfare and how they were treated, and it comes naturally full of protein (which is not essential as wet food should cover that). Lamb is palatable and easy to digest, even for those with sensitive tums and the only parts of the lamb that have been used are nutritionally valuable parts, this means there are no hooves, heads, etc.

The ingredients included are of high quality, which means that there are no growth hormones, antibiotics and nothing that is genetically modified in any way. Although the food is obviously processed, it is as natural as possible and suitable for "normal" dogs that are pets or for those who do light work. Arden Grange's dry dog food is about the size of a ball of gold nugget cereal, so it should be good for most breeds, except small and large breeds, however, they also provide the same food for those mouths, so be sure to check them.

3. Harrington's Dog Food Complete Lamb and Rice Dry Mix, 15 kg

Harrington's brand is perhaps one of the best known in the UK and can be found in most supermarkets, normally this can be interpreted as negative, but not in this case as Harrington's is one of the best dog food brands in the UK with a great reputation for making fantastic products at affordable prices. Some of the key benefits you can expect from feeding your Harrington dog are Omega 3 and 6, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids from the added rich Kelp, healthy calcium and phosphorus teeth and bones and a reduced amount of flatulent smells (farts) you would believe from Yucca extract. On top of that, Harrington has citrus extracts that act as antioxidants.

In addition to these benefits, do you check the boxes when it comes to being classified as "one of the best" and "complete"? Yes, it is. Harrington's complete dry dog food contains no added sugars, no added wheat, no added dairy, and no added soy. However, this product is not grain-free and Harrington does not claim that the ingredients are of natural origin or "high quality" or mention the level of processing. Jeff (our Jug) has had this many times in the past and loves it, we would also consider him a very healthy and active dog, so we have no complaints about the performance of this dry dog food and that speaks of experience.

In short, Harrington's full dry food is a very good full dry dog food option for those who want a quality, low-cost overall package. The croquette itself will provide your dog with all the nutrition he will need, but this food is not free of grains and not all ingredients are of natural or sustained origin, so if you want your food to be ethical and excellent, I'm not afraid that's not the case.

4. James Wellbeloved Jwb Adult Dog Light Turkey and Rice Kibble, 1.5 kg

James Wellbeloved is another great British dog food brand that makes quality food for canines across the country. This says it's a lightweight croquette, but it's quite bulky, so it may not be suitable for dogs with weak jaws like chihuahuas. Of the many Amazon stellar comments James Wellbeloved has received, many of them have cited using this as an aid to weight loss due to its low calorie levels. This is what we strongly recommend and call the best dry dog food for dogs that have low activity levels or are overweight.

OK, the low-calorie, tasty boxes have been checked, what about the rest? Well, this only uses natural ingredients, which means it's mild to the stomach and gives it a great nutritional boost, it's hypoallergenic, which means it's unlikely that your dog will have an adverse reaction of any kind and has no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives and, finally, Your free grain. James Wellbeloved has also gone beyond most dry dog food brands by adding that the food has added dietary fiber to keep dogs full longer, has a blend of taurine, glucosamine, chondroitin and herbs for a healthy heart and joints, omega 3 + 6 for bright, pleasant coats, cassava extracts to keep odors low, and prebiotic, natural chicory inulin for a happy bowel.

In summary, James Wellbeloved is our best recommended dry food for overweight dogs and low activity dogs. It's very healthy for any type of dog, while being light in calories and giving you all the nutrients you need while you're dieting. He won't let you down with these things.

5. Forthglade 100 Percent Natural Dog Food Cold Pressed Dry Dog Food Grain Free with Chicken and Vegetables, 6 kg Bag

Forthglade has the distinction of making one of the best wet dog foods we've ever reviewed, we were pleasantly surprised to learn they also make dry food! But is it that good? Yes! Yes, it is. Forthglade's dry food is made with natural ingredients with only vitamins and minerals added for a complete package. Despite this, we still recommend mixing it with the wet material. Forthglade has cold pressed its food to help pack the nutrients and make them softer for your dog's belly by making it easier to break them down. This is something really good and clearly done ethically and with love for Forthglade. In our vegetable-flavored chicken tasting batch, Jeff clearly found it tasty and easy to chew: his stools were very healthy and his flatulence was low. The best.

You'll be pleased to know that Forthglade's cold pressed dry dog food also checks many boxes: it has natural ingredients, no added sugar, salt, flavorings or colors, contains no grains, is hypoallergenic, and is not genetically modified. As with most brands on this list, this food meets all the requirements to be considered the best dry dog food.

In short, Forthglade's entry on the list is good and a worthy contender for first place. Check all the boxes you should want and things are easy to digest and come from a reputable brand. Definitely a dry food brand to watch out for.

6. Burgess Sensitive Hypoallergenic Dog Food Puppy British Turkey and Rice 2kg

Our first entry for young puppies is the Burgess Sensitive and Hypoallergenic dog food for puppies. This was one of the brands that Jeff liked very much when he was a puppy with us. It's full of healthy ingredients ready to help them grow healthy. What we liked about Burgess' offer was how sturdy and packaged his dried croquette pieces were, how easy it was to chew and how much he seemed to taste to our dog. As we already know, puppies need a balanced diet when they grow up to make sure they grow "properly".

Obviously, this food is hypoallergenic and perfect for sensitive tums, such as puppies, so you can avoid many messy situations with this dry food against some of the poorest things in the supermarket. However, what goes against Burgess is his lack of a definitive answer whether it is free of grains or genetically modified, our researchers here could not find the answer, which means that we have to mark it as a "no". That said, we still believe this is a high quality dry dog food that should be considered, just take a look at the vast majority of positive reviews on Amazon and the effect it has had on your dogs! That many can't be wrong, right?

To sum up, this is an excellent dry dog food for puppies at a very generous price: we believe it contains grains and may be genetically modified, but if you can see further or don't care, Burgess Sensitive Hypoallergenic Food for Puppies is a strong choice.

Burgess Sensitive Hypoallergenic Food for Puppies

7. Amazon Brand - Solimo - Complete Dry Dog Food for Adult Dogs, Rich in Beef with Peas, 1 Pack of 20kg

Solimo Complete Dry Dog Food is an Amazon brand of dry dog food that we have been commissioned to review. Amazon wants to make it easier for people to buy products online and increasingly buy products to sell directly; this means that deliveries are shorter and products are often much cheaper, but is the quality the same? Let's take a look at how Solimo Complete Dry Dog Food compares to the best dry dog food. First of all, Jeff liked it? Yes, he did. He had no trouble eating this croquette after mixing it with our wet food; this is a minimal accomplishment, as if he didn't eat it, we wouldn't check it, however, he seemed to really enjoy the taste and had no trouble breaking down the golden croquettes.

As far as the checkboxes are concerned, Solimo Complete dry dog food contains no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives, contains natural prebiotics for easy digestion, but there is no information on whether it is free of grains, hypoallergenic or made only with natural ingredients. . Unfortunately, when I looked online, there is very little, which leads me to the conclusion that it is not. This food is very affordable and tasty for your dog, but if you want the best, then it's best to avoid it.

Unfortunately, you will need to visit Amazon to see the ingredients, as they are not available.

8. Wellness CORE Ocean Dog Food Dry Grain Free - Salmon & Tuna, 1.8 kg

There are not many dry options on this list where the source of meat and protein has been fish, so we decided to look for a dry food for dogs and the best we found was Wellness CORE. Wellness CORE non-grain dog food gets 32-37% of its protein from fish (specifically salmon) and keeps carbohydrate and fat content naturally low; this makes Wellness CORE an inexhaustible source of protein, which means it's an ideal choice for those who don't want to feed them wet food. Jeff found that the food was easy to chew and had no problems with taste, however, it's worth noting that he wasn't as enthusiastic about this as the meat-based options, but that would be natural, we believe.

One of the best features of Wellness CORE is its abundance of minerals, vitamins and nutrients, since fish (in our opinion) is already healthier than white and red meat. These things are made with natural ingredients, naturally free of grains, hypoallergenic and free of artificial colours, flavours and preservatives; this means it's a clean set of features you'd really want in a dry food option. We can't really emphasize how healthy we think this is and if your wet food choice has red/white meat, a fish-based croquette is a perfect match.

In short, if you want a dry fish food, Wellness CORE offers the best that we have reviewed. Tasty, extremely healthy, relatively inexpensive and meets all requirements. It's just great.

Wellness CORE dry dog food ingredients

Vitamin A 14,000 IU, Vitamin D3 850 IU, Vitamin E 120 mg, Zinc sulphate, monohydrate 125 mg, Ferrous sulphate, monohydrate 100 mg, Cupric sulphate, pentahydrate 10 mg, Manganous oxide 3 mg, Calcium iodate, anhydrous 1 mg, Sodium Selenite 0.2 mg.

9. Pooch & Mutt - Complete Dry Dog Food - Health & Digestion (Grain Free & 100% Natural)- Salmon & Sweet Potato, 2kg

Pooch & Mutt produces a variety of foods, from moist foods to tasty treats and dry foods. They also specialize in making different types of dry dog food, such as a quiet, relaxed mix, health and digestion (this one we're reviewing), fresh breath, easy movement (joint support), and thin and thin (weight loss mix). What we need to check is health and digestion which we consider the 'standard' edition: a dry, healthy croquette that is easy to digest should be the minimum if you consider it to be one of the best dry dogs. Foods really did mix this with our current wet food (ouglade) and our jar Jeff loved these things more than usual to eat croquettes. He gobbled it up and seemed to have no trouble chewing the pieces, he even started licking his bowl later, which isn't always the case with him! That's the taste and feel test done, what about the most important health and nutrition?

Pooch & Mutt's complete dry dog food is hypoallergenic, grain-free and includes pro/prebiotics that help with digestion (like the yoghurts you can buy) and is also gluten-free, artificial colorings, preservatives and flavors and is also free of any GM food. Its main source of protein is fish (salmon), which makes it low in fat and carbohydrates compared to blends that use red and white meats. All ingredients come from natural sources that give this food a clean look when it comes to desirable characteristics. While it may be easy to think that all dry dog foods are the same, they really aren't, and the fact that my dog loved this much more than some of the others he has had over the years separates him from the rest.

To conclude, Pooch & Mutt's complete health and digestion is one of the best dry dog food brands on the market and this blend will help your dog get a shiny coat, healthy teeth and lots of energy. Around £6 per kg is also competitively priced!

Pooch & Mutt’s health and digestion complete dry dog food ingredients

10. IAMS for Vitality Small/Medium Breed Adult Dry Dog Food with Fresh Chicken, 3 kg

We usually stay away from conventional brands, because (rightly or wrongly) we feel that they lack the overall quality, as some of the "indie" brands and cut corners with the ingredients they use to do so. However, we have used IAMS in the past and when they asked us to do a review, we gave them the benefit of the doubt. Jeff enjoyed Iams' dog food (it's a dry croquette, even if it doesn't say so in the bag) and had no trouble breaking it down and clearly enjoyed the taste. By the way, the flavor we got was chicken. The size of the seeds was good, the texture was good and the smell was normal. No complaints.

Now is the time to discuss the really important things that should be included, whether it's the "best" dry dog food or at least the best in its category. Unfortunately for the end user, IAMS dog food is not free of grains (grains are second on the ingredient list), it is not made only with natural ingredients (chicken by-product is in the ingredients) and it is not hypoallergenic. This is not to say that the food is unhealthy for your dog, far from it, IAMS adult dog food will nourish and feed your dog, but compared to the others on this list, it is much cheaper but does not mark many of the boxes. We would expect from a conventional supermarket brand.

In conclusion, you get what you pay for with IAMS: you'll get food that your dog will probably love, but there are foods that may cost a little more but will be softer on the stomach and won't fill them with empty ones. carbohydrates provided by grains.

IAMS Adult Dog Food Ingredients

Chicken, Ground Whole Grain Corn, Ground Whole Grain Sorghum, Chicken By-Product Meal, Dried Beet Pulp, Natural Flavor, Chicken Fat (preserved with mixed Tocopherols), Dried Egg Product, Potassium Chloride, Flaxseed, Caramel Color, Salt, L-Lysine Monohydrochloride, Choline Chloride, Carrots, Tomatoes, Calcium Carbonate, Fructooligosaccharides, Spinach, Green Peas, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Sodium Selenite, Manganese Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Potassium Iodide), Vitamins (Vitamin E Supplement, Ascorbic Acid, Calcium Pantothenate, Vitamin A Supplement, Biotin, Thiamine Mononitrate (source of Vitamin B1), Vitamin B12 supplement, Niacin, Riboflavin Supplement (source of Vitamin B2), Inositol, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (source of Vitamin B6), Vitamin D3 Supplement, Folic Acid), Dried Brewers Yeast, DL-Methionine, Dried Apple Pomace, L-Carnitine, Dried Blueberry Pomace, Mixed Tocopherols, Rosemary Extract.

What is dry dog food?

Dry dog food can sometimes be called croquettes and is a processed food created using a different method of condensing many different nutrients into a small cookie as food. It is the opposite of wet dog food and often contains different nutrients and minerals that wet food cannot possess. Dry food manufacturing is an economical and efficient way to produce food for the mass market, it is also a very efficient way to package more nutrients and calories into the smallest possible "seed".

Dry dog food is a hard cookie that requires a decent jaw to decompose, however, different types of dry food are made for different sizes of dogs. To pack all the nutrients in a process called "extrusion" is needed: the chosen ingredients are packaged and then water is added to increase the humidity level (about 35%). These are heated and pressed to an extremely high pressure that then fuses the ingredients, then cut to the size that results in the croquette. After leaving the extruder, the croquette can be baked at a lower temperature to reduce the humidity caused by dryness.

Flavourings can be added to dry foods, either naturally or artificially, resulting in a powdered surface.

Benefits of dry food for your dog

Dry dog food is a modern wonder in terms of giving your dog the best nutrition at an affordable price. Some may argue that dry food is the best food you can give a dog, as certain types are "complete", meaning they have all the vitamins and minerals a dog needs to live a healthy life without the need for wet food; very rarely, if wet dog food is complete.

  • Some of the benefits of dry dog food are:
  • Complete nutrition for your dog (with some brands)
  • Profitable as dry food is much cheaper per kg than wet food
  • Modern dry food brands may be hypoallergenic to reduce adverse reactions.
  • Keeps teeth clean and sharp when chewed.
  • Fiber-filled packaging
  • Has a very long service life

What to Consider When Looking for Dry Dog Food

Not all dry dog foods are the same and there are some dry foods designed specifically for certain dietary requirements and what stage of the dog's life he is at. Before considering one of our foods reviewed on this page, consider the following:

Age of the dog

There are three stages of a dog when it comes to food: puppies, adults and older adults and dogs in these three stages need different combinations and amounts of nutrients and minerals. Puppies may need smaller pieces of croquettes as they will not yet have adult teeth and the food must contain more nutrients such as protein to keep their bodies growing. Older dogs are best served when their diet has more vital oils and calcium to help maintain their joints in old age. Healthy adult dogs should get a combination of both.

Dog Health

You should judge your dog's overall health to determine whether or not he should follow a special diet to aid recovery. Keep in mind that being underweight or overweight is a sign of health and you should feed them accordingly. We have a specific dry food for weight loss recommended in the list that we believe you should consider if you have an obese dog.

Budget

The biggest and most popular brands can be expensive; you should consider whether the dog food you want won't put too much strain on your long-term finances. Sometimes, eating a cheaper meal is the best option overall. We've made sure to include some budget options on our list.

Criteria to be the best

Dogs will eat most of the things you put in front of them, as long as they are tasty, but not all foods are the same and not all foods are as healthy as the others. When we brainstormed JugDog HQ, we needed to develop a criterion against which dog food would be compared to see if it was suitable to be called a good dry food option. Although the criterion has a structure, it is also rigid, and the reviewers' general criterion is the deciding factor if it is an impasse: let's take a look at the aspects we consider important in anything that feeds your dog:

Is it made from natural products?

Is it hypoallergenic?

Is it free of grains?

Is it free of additional colors, flavors, or preservatives?

Natural Ingredients

An important positive point for a good dog food is obtained if it has been done using only natural products. Natural products mean that nothing genetically modified or non-organic has been used. The vegetables must be natural and the meat must be from a real animal and not full of additives. Foods made without animal products or meat meals 'also receive a big boost from us: animal meals by product and meat refer to the use of parts such as hooves, heads, feet, etc. Meat should only be from muscle.

Hypoallergenic

No one can guarantee that a dog will not receive an allergic reaction from food, so there is no official government agency that gives a true hypoallergenic food with a seal of approval. However, foods are less likely to cause a reaction by limiting the number of different ingredients, maintaining natural ingredients, and avoiding genetically modified foods and other known ingredients commonly associated with allergies. Therefore, a food labeled "hypoallergenic" is not allergy-proof, but is extremely unlikely to cause an allergic reaction in a dog.

Allergic reactions may include, but are not limited to, skin rashes, dry skin, poor quality coat, diarrhea.

Grain-free

A grain-free food means that the food has not been filled with "empty" carbohydrates that provide energy but do not provide much nutrition on their own. Although there is nothing particularly bad with grains per se, a food where grains are replaced by other natural ingredients is certainly better. Wheat and corn can also trigger allergies in some dogs.

No additional coloring, flavoring, or preservatives.

The latter is obvious. So that we can take a chance and recommend a dry food, we hope it will be free of additional colors, flavors and preservatives that can inflate the amount of calories, cause digestive problems and give your dog sugar that could easily be avoided.
