Submissions
The Attic Review accepts submissions of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and art year round to be published online on our website. For now, we publish volumes of our work, but these exist more as changing bodies. We're trying to be constantly accepting and publishing work to provide a continuous flow of both art and literature for our viewers. We base these compilations of work around the seasons, having four per year, which grow throughout the season, only becoming complete at the end. Submissions can be made to either our email or by filling out the google form at the bottom of the page. Again, please try to follow all of the guideline as it makes it much easier for us to publish your work.
Biography & Description
With each submission we require both a short biography and description of the work. We wish to learn a little bit about you, your craft, any previous publications, and whatever else you want to share. We also enjoy a short description or an artist statement, if you would like to think of it that way. This could include themes in your work, inspirations, what you want us to know about your piece. We care deeply about what is not necessarily easily visible in your work, so tell us what you were thinking about while creating the work. We often find the meaning can be greatly beneficial for allowing a piece to do what it is supposed to. These will be published along-side your work, possibly changed slightly for clarity.
Language & Originality
When it comes to language, submissions must be in English. That being said, we do accept translations, but these do require a copy of the original work and written permission from the original author. Every piece which is submitted must be completely original to the author/artist. Of course, this means we do not accept anything touched by AI; we want work from you not a machine.
Simultaneous & Previously Published Submissions
When it comes to this, we ask that you submit work that hasn't been published yet. But, you are welcome to have simultaneous submission, though if your work is accepted elsewhere before we get back to you, please notify us of this. Once your work is accepted, we allow the author/artist to retain full ownership of the work, though we will have exclusive publication rights until after we have published the work. This means that, once accepted, the piece must not be published elsewhere until it has been by us. After this, feel free to submit and publish the work again, but please acknowledge the original publication in The Attic Review.
Response Time & Payment
As an all-volunteer run publication, we work to respond as fast as we can, but we have no promises for speed. We want to give each piece equal care when reviewing, so it may take a while for a response. Still, we will always respond eventually, and after four months, if you would like, feel free to reach out via our email: attic.review.art.literature@gmail.com. As for payment, at this time, we do not offer anything for published work, but we are very grateful for every piece.
Submission Length & Category Guidelines
For now, we accepts as many submissions to as many categories as you wish. So feel free to maybe submit some poetry along with a painting, you'll just have to make multiple submissions.
Fiction: Fiction submissions may not go above 8,000 words, but we strongly encourage works to be shorter, staying between the 1,000-5,000 range for best chance of being published.
Nonfiction: Nonfiction submissions must not exceed 10,000 words, but again, straying to close to this large word limit might deter us from wanting to publish you, unless the piece is nearly perfect. With nonfiction works, if they contain research/quotations please make sure to let us no how your work is formatted and try to correctly cite any and all sources.
Poetry: Feel free to submit up to five poems, though all might not be accepted together.
Art: We accept any form of art that you wish to submit, and all we ask for is relatively high quality photos/scans of the work.Â
Thank You So Much For Your Interest,
The Attic Review xx
