March 13, 2022 Update

Dear fellow Skippers and Mates,

We are excited to announce that after a two year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we will be hosting the Ancient Mariner Regatta, Memorial Day weekend, May 27-30, 2022 at the California Maritime Academy.

For the most part we anticipate things to be the same as they were in 2019. The most significant change to expect this year is a fee increase to $175 per person. Previously, the costs of operating at CMA surpassed the fees we were collecting.  We were fortunate to have a bit of a nest egg to absorb some of the cost, but unfortunately, the costs still outweigh our income.  We are forced to charge $175 per person in order to make sure that the regatta doesn’t continue to lose money each year.  We hope that you understand that we work hard to put on the best Regatta that we can, while doing our best to manage the cost to our participants.

Please watch for upcoming registration info that will outline specific registration dates (roughly the same timeline as in the past), judging information and more. We are hopeful to include an online payment option this year too.

If you have any general regatta questions regarding registration or other topics, please feel free to email us at ancientmariner1952@gmail.com and we will do our best to answer your question. We look forward to seeing everyone this year in Vallejo and hope that we have a fantastic competition.

Yours in Sea Scouting,

The Ancient Mariner Regatta Committee

March 1, 2021 COVID-19 Update

Dear Fellow Sea Scouters,

Here’s the bad news: The COVID-19 pandemic will once again prevent us from safely having a normal regatta season. The three primary Northern California Sea Scout Regattas have been cancelled this year.

Here’s the good news: We may be able to safely conduct outdoor events this summer, if current trends continue. We don’t want to wait until next regatta season to see you. So, the regatta committees are working together to co-host a totally new event:

Salty Mariner Cruise In

July 22 to 25

Westgate Landing Regional Park, Lodi, CA

We’ve reserved the entire park, including all docks and campsites. We don’t know exactly what the event will look like yet, but it will be a fun mix of regatta, rendezvous, and summer cruise activities.

We hope that your ship will add this event to your summer cruise itinerary or make a special trip.

We aren’t ready to register ships quite yet, but it would help us greatly if you would let us know if your ship may be interested in attending. Please fill out this brief form by March 15.

We’ll stay in touch and share more details as soon as they are available. Of course, we’ll follow all COVID-19 safety guidelines. If you have any questions, please reach out to us at saltymarinercruisein@gmail.com.

Yours In Scouting,

The Committees of Seafarers’ Regatta, Old Salts’ Regatta and Ancient Mariner Regatta

April 4, 2020 COVID-19 Update

Friends and fellow Sea Scouts,

I hope that this letter finds you and yours healthy and well.  Unfortunately, I am writing with sad news.  After much discussion, your AMR committee has decided to cancel our event for this year.  We had hoped that the calendar would be on our side, however as we proceeded with a continuous level of uncertainty, we decided that the most prudent decision was to forego at this time.  Many factors led to this decision, but I believe it goes without saying that the health and safety of all of our Scouts is most important.

I am pleased to say that we are already pushing ahead with planning for next year’s event.  We have told CMA that we are committed to the same dates for 2021.  We are also pursuing plans for an alternative event later in 2020.  More to come on that very soon.

If you have any questions or concerns, as always feel free to reach out to me directly, or to the committee at large through the AMR email.  Hopefully we will see the risks from corona virus reduced soon, but in the meantime, please be safe, and we look forward to seeing everyone very soon.

Max Rosenberg

Chairman, Ancient Mariner Regatta

The Ancient Mariner Regatta (AMR) began in 1952. The home of AMR was Coast Guard Island, Alameda, CA until the tragic events of 9/11/01. After 9/11, the heightened level of security at the Coast Guard base could potentially prohibit the regatta from happening; as a result, the regatta was temporarily rehomed to the Sea Scout Base in Stockton, and then found a home on the aircraft carrier USS Hornet for several years. Today, the regatta calls the California Maritime Academy (CMA) home.

Sea Scouts, Mariner Scouts, and Venture Crews are invited to attend the regatta and try their best as they compete in the six all ship events and the nineteen team events offered at the regatta. The regatta has a unique method of scoring, where all ships have to opportunity to achieve Clipper Class (the highest award), as well as several individual awards such as the Great Republic.

For more information on how to register with the regatta or to help be a part of this great competition, please contact us at ancientmariner1952@gmail.com.
