Shy 10-year-old Max (Cayden Boyd) loses himself in an elaborate fantasy world to escape the classmates who bully him and the constant bickering of his parents (David Arquette and Kristin Davis). Max's fourth grade teacher, Mr. Electricidad (George Lopez) encourages Max to keep recording his dreams, but Max makes the mistake of sharing the adventures of Sharkboy (Taylor Lautner) and Lavagirl (Taylor Dooley) with his class -- and of course no one believes that Max is friends with a boy who was raised by sharks and a girl with supernatural powers who emits red-hot rocks. But then Sharkboy and Lavagirl show up at school one stormy day and plead with Max to come with them to the three-dimensional Planet Drool -- Max's imagination and dreams are the only thing that can save their planet. Max heads to a paradise filled with roller coasters, cool gadgets like a fudge-spewing motorbike, and the delicious Land of Milk and Cookies to help his friends defeat the nefarious Mr. Electric and keep his dreams alive.

Max created SharkBoy during a dream that later became real, through Max's belief in his dreams. While they're on the same team, SharkBoy's more competitive nature tends to make them argue. Upon their first meeting, Max took SharkBoy into his own home where Max kept SharkBoy, "fed and in water." SharkBoy seemingly enjoyed telling Max about his adventures across the universe. SharkBoy tends to snap at him whenever Max makes a mistake, though this is due to his poor social skills from his years living with sharks. Max doesn't seem to have any hard feelings and is friends with SharkBoy.

Daydreamy Max, ridiculed by his classmates, conjures up his perfect dreamworld: the Planet Drool. But he learns that his dream is more powerful than even he suspects when his favorite dream superheroes, Sharkboy and Lavagirl, materialize on Earth asking for his help. An alien intelligence is interfering with his dream utopia, and darkness threatens his beloved Planet Drool. On their adventures there, Max encounters dream versions of his classmates and teachers who both help and hinder his quest. Is it true, as Sharkboy and Lavagirl say, that only Max, the most powerful dreamer, can stop it?
