GRAMMAR

In Thai, the prefixes "การ" and "ความ" are used to form abstract nouns.

• "การ" is used mainly with verbs, turning them into activity or process nouns.

• "ความ" is used with adjectives or abstract states, turning them into concept or quality nouns.

📘 การ (gaan)

• Structure: การ + verb

• Function: Turns an action into a noun (like adding "-ing" or "the act of..." in English)

• Examples from reading:

  • การทำงาน – working / employment

  • การใช้ชีวิต – living life

  • การศึกษา – education

  • การพัฒนา – development

📗 ความ (khwaam)

• Structure: ความ + adjective or abstract noun

• Function: Turns a quality or state into an abstract noun (like “-ness”, “-ity” in English)

• Examples from reading:

  • ความก้าวหน้า – progress

  • ความสมดุล – balance

  • ความใฝ่ฝัน – aspiration
