What is the Three Gorges Dam?

  • What Is it? The Three Gorges Dam is the largest dam and concrete structure in the world.


  • Location: Western China on the Yangtze River.


  • Intentions: This dam was intended to stop life threatening flood waters (that occur every 100 years). Also, it was designed to make the Yangtze River more navigable, and to utilize energy.

The Three Gorges Dam (TGD) is a massive structure with many effects, some being good and some being bad. This dam has many pros as well as cons. Engineering this this dam was not easy, especially due to the dam's location in the gorges. The dam did not exactly agree with mother nature in many different ways. Finally, the construction of the dam took an enormous toll on surrounding civilizations.
