Please check the Director's Calendar for more information regarding the activities above as time gets closer to each event.

Please note:

  1. Exact times for each event will be entered as soon as they become available. Sometimes many factors go into the timing of each event: When will the buses be available? What time can food be ready/available so our students can eat? What time can we have access to the facilties we need for the event? Please be patient. Updates are entered into the Directors Calendar and sent into the Band Parent Group Me as soon as they are available.

  2. Consider pulling up the Directors Calendar as a window on your phone and leaving it open. It would be best NOT to print out the schedule from the Directors Calendar before the event because sometimes those times will need to be updated during the event (like BOA Indy) to adapt to time changes out of our control. Please check the Directors Calendar for the most up-to-date information.

Halloween with The Franklin Band

Please send candy donations!

It’s Spooky Season! The Franklin Band will host a community Trick-or-Treat event in the FHS stadium on Tuesday October 25th from 7:00-8:00 pm. We need your help collecting candy for the event. Please send in your student with two or three bags of individually-wrapped candy to distribute to our guests at the event. have your student place the candy on the table designated for donations in the band room. Thanks so much for your help with this! There will also be more details coming from section parents about the event.

Contest of Champions Tailgate

Hi Band Family,

It's time for another tailgate on the day of the Contest of Champions competition! Sign up link is at end of email.

WHAT: This tailgate is by section, and some sections are combined. Please sign up to bring an item or items according to the section(s) of your band student(s). Note that we are feeding the band, band staff, and band families. If you're able to give a little more, please do to cover those who aren't able.

WHEN: Saturday, October 29 at approximately 6:00 PM, immediately following announcement of finalists bands.

WHEN TO SET UP: Everything will need to be set up and ready to go before finalists are announced. Parents will race back to the tailgate area and prepare to feed the band. If we are a finalist and one of the first bands to perform in finals, we have to be really fast!

WHEN TO TEAR DOWN: It depends on if our band makes finals and, if so, their performance order. In years past, when we were one of the first finalists band to perform, we left everything and returned to tear down and clean up after our band performed. Everything seemed fine, but I wouldn't leave anything valuable.

WHERE: MTSU. Specific lot TBD. Watch Parent Group Me on day of for updates.

DECOR THEME: Spooky Tailgate or Forever Young

Power is always a challenge at this tailgate. Generators, extension cords, and outdoor lighting (and weather dependent, heaters) are critical. If you are able to help with these items, we really do need you!

This tailgate requires all hands on deck! If you can contribute your time and help more than just bringing food or drinks, please contact me via Group Me or text. You are needed! No, really, you are!

NEWS FROM THE STAND!

News from the Stand!

Hello Band Parents,

And here we are – the last home game of the season! Your last opportunity to work in the stand!

This is meant to be the Percussion section night but as they are a small group and it’s Senior night I am changing things up.

If you are a Senior Parent do not volunteer to take a shift! Enjoy all of this very special night and come back to the stand next season whenever you want. Obviously if you feel the need to donate Mac and Cheese or Taco meat I will not say no 😊

If you are part of the awesome crew of Band helpers (chaperones, props, etc) who are going to Indy the next morning do not volunteer to take a shift! You need to get as much rest as possible and we appreciate all you do for our kids on the road.

If you are a parent from Percussion (and not already excused) please sign up as this is your section’s night!

If you are a parent who has not put in a shift at the concession stand yet – PLEASE sign up! The only way the band works is if everyone contributes. The concessions stand is a big part of our fundraising and we make more money if we can get everyone through the line as effectively as possible. I promise I will find you a job that you will love.

If you are a parent from any section that has volunteered already but had a great time (and who didn’t!) please consider signing up again because a lot of our faithful volunteers are Senior parents.

Thank you – let’s finish strong!

Schedule:

10/21 - Percussion and Volunteers

• If you can’t volunteer for a shift, please sign up for Mac and Cheese or Taco Meat for our famous Super Nachos. Remember if you want to make it but don’t want to leave your crock pot, you can always bring it in a disposable pan and we can put it into one of ours to keep warm.

• For Senior parents – I know this is a big year for you and you want to see all the moments. We will find a job that works for you!

• Sign up to help the Grill team – they are always looking for help around the grill. Reach out to me and I will put you in touch with them

• Sign up to smoke a couple of Boston Butts – Concessions will provide the meat if you can provide the time! A big shout out to Bryan DeCuir for providing the BBQ for the 9/2 game.

• People always ask if they can bring me water or some food items. I cannot take donations of items but if you want to donate a Sams Club Gift card, I can always put those to great use.

• Come buy Concessions during the game!

Thanks everyone!

Upcoming Band Booster Meetings

Band Booster meetings are for ALL band parents! Upcoming dates for your calendar:

October 18th

November 29th

Band Booster meetings are held in the band room at 7pm unless otherwise updated in the Director's Calendar.

Send in your student's photos for Senior Spotlight!

Hello, Band Family! We are hoping to put together some senior spotlights to share on social media and would like to include all of the band seniors (guard, marchers, ensemble participants)!

The plan is to use "a how is started/how its going format." For the "how it started" photo we need a picture of your kiddo before high school doing their thing (e.g., with an instrument in jr high or before, dancing/gymnastics etc). For the "how it's going" photo we need a recent photo (from a marching or concert band event or guard performance).

Here is a form we are using to collect photos and information to build the spotlights: https://forms.gle/8j8B5iHnQZ83rS5v9

Rehearsal Absence Form

Please do everything possible to avoid missing rehearsals. Directors count on students attending every rehearsal especially since they are learning new material every day.

If missing rehearsal is absolutely unavoidable, students must fill out this form: 2022-23 Rehearsal Absence Form before the rehearsal they are going to miss. **Students should also contact their section leaders in their section GroupMe before rehearsal so they can be aware as well.

Mid-State Auditions

What is Mid-state?

Directly from the MTSBOA mid-state website: "Mid-State is a weekend event held each Spring that provides an opportunity for the best musicians of Middle Tennessee to perform with one another in large ensembles. Each Mid-State ensemble will prepare and perform a concert with just a few short rehearsals. To make the Mid-State Band or Orchestra, students must go through the audition process in the Fall, which includes three parts: scales, prepared music, and sight reading. The highest scored musicians in each section are selected to be a member of the Mid-State Band or Orchestra, with the top few high school musicians from each section qualifying for All-State."

Mid-State is a huge honor and a fun, exciting weekend for our students. TFB recommends every band student strongly consider auditioning. TFB Directors have published the audition music in schoology. Seniors in each section are often happy to help underclassmen work on their audition pieces and scales. Those who audition will frequently make it into Wilco Honor Band, which is a Friday and Saturday held usually at Brentwood Baptist Church.

2022-23 Mid-state Auditions will be held the following dates and locations:

November 19, 2022 | 11/12 Band & Orchestra, 9-12 Jazz

Antioch High School

December 3, 2022 | 9/10 Band & Orchestra

Wilson Central High School

Band Mid-State Weekend is usually held in early January at MTSU. More info to come once available.

*(Students ride the bus to Mid-State Weekend with other Mid-State students from Williamson County. Parents are responsible for picking up their students after their final concerts).

Personalized Parent Flags

The Fabrication Team is very excited to offer personalized parent flags! These flags can be used all year and from one season to another! Of course, we will still be making our popular show-themed parent flags for your collection, but those will be made later in the season after our work for the show is done.

You will choose the color of your flag, then personalize it with your student’s name and instrument or section. Flags are $20 each and hand-made to order. All profits go to the band! You may pick up your flags at the merch table before home football games or at band booster meetings. We can’t wait to see all that TFB pride!

Order on the band website: www.thefranklinband.org

Gimme 5!

Gimme 5! Please help us spread the word that we are seeking donations to fund our large instrument replacement program. You can forward the following URL: https://donorbox.org/gimme-five Please send it to grandparents, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and anyone who has a heart for our band program. You can also ask them to scan this QR code. One time donations are great, but recurring donations are even better!

TFB Family Show Etiquette

The Franklin Band is well-known and respected for being a kind and courteous program. So says Melissa Gufston-Hines of the O'Fallon HS Band, "We love when we get to see the folks of the Franklin Band at shows because we can always count on them being so classy."

Franklin Band Family Show Etiquette (this applies to Winter Guard, and all Concert performances)

*Come see the band perform.

*Show up early. Allow time to get to your seat.

*Avoid being a distraction (silence cell phones, only enter and depart between performances, keep children seated/as quiet as possible, etc)

*STAND AND APPLAUD EACH PERFORMANCE in recognition of the hard work and effort of the students. And no matter where we finish in the standings at the end of the event, applaud every band. They’ve all had many long, hard days just like our students.

*Focus on your Enjoyment of a performance or don’t comment at all. You don’t know who is sitting within hearing. This includes avoiding sending negative texts that someone could screenshot/forward to others. We only share positive comments about other bands. If you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all.
