A Note from the Inaugural Class of 2020 Band Officers

Hello TFB Families! My name is Jacob Myers and I am a senior trumpet player and the first Franklin Band President. This year, Mr. Campos and Mrs. Vogt decided to expand TFB’s student leadership platform with a new system of band officers. I, along with TFB Officers Patrick Lama, Sam Pillay, Anna Young, Braxton Lazarus, and Sophia Grasso were elected by the band a few weeks ago. We hope to uphold the band’s values, traditions, and culture throughout this year. Our key initiatives include organizing community experiences (including last week’s movie night), working with school and district administrators to secure additional funding and resources, and promoting recruitment at our feeder schools through outreach events. We hope that by remaining anchored in our values, we will strive for excellence as we continue to adapt to the new realities of this year.

Although this season has presented a plethora unique challenges, it has also offered many equally unique opportunities. In particular, with the absence of competitions, we have grown more connected with our community than in years past. Over the next 3 weeks, we will have a high concentration of performances, between our Thursday night community performance, Saturday Marchathons, and Bands of America live events. As we explore these new opportunities and formats, it is important to keep an open mind. The most important lesson band has taught me over the past four years is the value of growing through adversity. As we adapt to the obstacles that face us, there will be challenges. The obstacle is the way. Whether it be a freshman overwhelmed by the nuance of marching or a senior with mixed emotions about losing competitions, what is important is growing from the experience. Even if we try and fail, and try again and fail again, it is important to remember that we strive for progress not perfection. This is important now more than ever as we near the end of our season. It is important to recognize that there will always be room for improvement. In this way, we will never be perfect, but we can still be proud of what we achieved and how we have grown—in music, in marching and spinning, and most importantly in character.
