BRIGHT SPOTS IN OUR COMMUNITY // SHOUT OUT BOARD

Nayda Peace (Las Vegas CM'19) created a web-page for all students to stay connected. The class site has been running since March 16th, just 3 days after the order to close schools in CCSD. She is working on a Legacy Project, where her Seniors are committing to the legacies they want to leave after they leave high school. Each addition will be added into a hardcover book, and it will be mailed to them at a later date. This book project will serve as something they can keep far beyond high school and reflect back on. It will remind them to always choose courage because people are rooting for them!

PRISM (TFA Las Vegas's LGBTQ+ board) continues to meet during the closures, and in early April hosted a Virtual PRISM Kiki to gather our LGBTQ+ community and help us feel connected during these strange times. Alums from 2010 all the way to current 2018 and 2019 corps members participated and got to build new relationships and strengthen existing ones. Go PRISM!

Alexis Baranoff (Dallas Corps Member ' 17) currently lives in Vegas and is enrolled at UNLV's Med School program in the fall. Last week, she created Support a Senior Las Vegas in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Her goal through this program is to connect seniors in nursing homes and assisted living residences with local Las Vegas families through phone/video communication. She hopes this will help mitigate the stress, anxiety, and hopelessness many of our most vulnerable citizens are feeling at this time, especially those who do not have anyone to talk to. She also hopes to be able to begin matching seniors with Las Vegas families and individuals sometime next week.

Michelle Quintero (Las Vegas Corps Member '18), Mallory Vaughn (‘18) and Courtney Clark (‘18) met at their school Monday morning, and were heart broken about their kids falling behind. Two parents and five kids showed up at Moore Elementary that morning- though of course school was cancelled.

Not knowing what to do with the parents & kids- they mobilized and made “academic goodie bags” with books, crayons, materials- gave them to the families that showed up AND went to parents HOMES and dropped off these bags at their doorsteps. They are now thinking about next steps that they can do virtually/to engage students that don’t have technology.
