After spending 10 weeks researching, sampling, and testing wallpapers from nine brands in a range of patterns, we found three peel-and-stick wallpapers that you can apply with confidence and (relative) ease, no matter your style.

We think shopping around for patterns is half the fun, which is why our top picks come in two distinct textures (smooth paper and fabric), have tons of patterns, and are easy to install. Our also-great pick is a worthy splurge, with hundreds of finely detailed patterns to pick from (but you may need some help installing it).

For this guide, I dove into recent scientific research, CDC recommendations, and industry standards on indoor air quality and materials found in wall coverings. I also interviewed Teresa McGrath and Nsilo Berry, both researchers at the Healthy Building Network. (HBN is a materials transparency organization for the architecture and construction industry. It shares information on building materials, and its database, the Pharos Project, received an award from the Environmental Protection Agency.) I also spoke with wallpaper manufacturers for the wallpapers we tested to inquire about the ordering process, lead times, application instructions, and clarifications on materials.

Check your walls: Peel-and-stick wallpaper works only on non-textured walls. It does not work at all on textured drywall, including spray textures like popcorn and orange peel, brush textures like sand swirl and rosebud, or knife textures like knockdown and comb.

The print quality on the samples we received was excellent, with crisp, fine lines and saturated colors. But tone did differ a bit from how it looked onscreen (which is why you should always order samples). There is a decent range of styles and color palettes to choose from, including truly small-scale prints (surprisingly uncommon for peel-and-stick wallpapers, which often reflect a bigger, bolder aesthetic).

Since peel-and-stick wallpaper does not require a wet adhesive (unlike traditional and some removable wallpapers), health concerns are mostly due to long-term exposure to ortho-phthalates (used to make PVC material flexible and pliable) and volatile organic compounds (or VOCs, usually from inks).

These tasteful texture effect wallpapers really do exist! The amazing faux wallpapers below are made to give walls a realistic effect of different textures, like concrete, brick, wood, and even crystals. Feast your eyes, and get some great inspiration for what you can do with wallpaper.

Brick wallpaper is a fantastic way to add warmth and character to a space without the commitment of stripping back to real bricks. Our Rustica mural achieves a rustic charm with its textured appearance and whitewashed patina, mimicking the look of aged and weathered bricks.

Choosing Lighting: Choose lighting that complements the rustic vibe. An articulated desk lamp in a metallic finish, as shown in the image, works well to spotlight the texture of the wallpaper.

Wood effect wallpaper adds a touch of natural warmth and texture to any room, helping to create a cozy, Nordic sanctuary. Our Nordic mural uses a unique print technique that transfers the look of burnt wood, complete with its organic rings and details, onto paper. When incorporating this type of wallpaper into your decor, consider these tips:

Flocking is the process of depositing many small fiber particles (called flock) onto a surface. It can also refer to the texture produced by the process, or to any material used primarily for its flocked surface. Flocking of an article can be performed for the purpose of increasing its value. It can also be performed for functional reasons including insulation, slip-or-grip[clarification needed] friction, retention of a liquid film, and low reflectivity.

Flocking is used in many ways. One example is in model building, where a grassy texture may be applied to a surface to make it look more realistic. Similarly, it is used by model car builders to get a scale carpet effect. Another use is on a Christmas tree, which may be flocked with a fluffy white spray to simulate snow. Other things may be flocked to give them a texture similar to velvet, velveteen, or velour, such as t-shirts, wallpaper, gift/jewelry boxes, and upholstery.

Flocking in the automotive industry is used for decorative purposes and may be applied to a number of different materials. Many rally cars also have a flocked dashboard to cut down on the sun reflecting through the windscreen. A view on the present state-of-the-art of flocking can be found in the first international exhibition "Flockage: the flock phenomenon" in the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery & Museum in Bournemouth.[2]

Inspired by the individual and unique beauty of each country, these special texture backgrounds of the world were created to bring the feel of that country to your images. Included are exotic textures from destinations such as Cuba, Morocco, Peru, India, and Vietnam.

Age, in the form of marks and print photo textures, often shows on older photos, and when you scan them in, they will show up on the digital file, too. But you can remove unwanted elements with editing tools in Adobe Photoshop.

Noise in photography is another term for texture. Noise reduction, which removes grain and background pattern from images, is important for modernizing scanned photos. You can get rid of that vintage grain effect, add some color, darken your image with a transparent overlay, or smooth out scratches and other imperfections that may have popped up over the years or exist due to more antiquated photography and development methods.

There are a number of blur modes that can smooth out images to remove textures. Blur, Blur More, and Lens Blur all keep subjects in focus while obscuring background details. The Surface Blur filter preserves edges while blurring an image.

Go to Filters and select the blur you want. A new dialog box will appear with sliders for any additional adjustments. Start with low numbers and then slide to the right, until the tool is blurring only as much of the unwanted texture as necessary.

This tool allows you to copy pixels from one area and paint over another area with those pixels. Hold the Alt key on Windows or the Option key on a Mac and click on the area you wish to copy, then paint your desired texture wherever it needs to go. 589ccfa754
