The polled results in our study represent the sum of the personal experience of a cohort of neurosurgeons at various levels of training from different countries. The results of this study are important as they will guide a series of future studies that will be performed by the authors as part of a neuroanatomy curriculum reform and standardization initiative. In addition, knowing the most recommended sources and the qualities that make these sources desirable to neurosurgeons will inform future book authors in the field. The results are also important for those embarking on a carrier in neurosurgery, by sparing them the time and effort required to search the realm of available neuroanatomy resources. The value of these results lies in the fact that the recommendations were given by certified neurosurgeons who reported the sum of their personal experience not only with the study of neuroanatomy but also with the level of neuroanatomical knowledge more junior neurosurgeons would need to master. In addition, because the results came from neurosurgeons practicing in different parts of the world, they give a good indication of the applicability of the chosen resources in different educational and practical environments, supporting the concept of neuroanatomy curriculum standardization.

Neurosurgery is the medical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the brain, spine, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves. Although it is fundamentally a surgical discipline, neurosurgery requires knowledge of neurology, critical care, trauma care, and radiology. Neuroanatomy and disorders of the human nervous system may be intimidating to students and non-neurological physicians. Professor John Hall contributed to the ninth and tenth editions of this textbook, and after the unprecedented death of Dr. Guyton in 2003, Dr. Hall resumed the responsibility of continuing the same trend and updating this great book since 2006.

Dr. Cohen is a leader in developing minimally invasive techniques to enhance the safety and efficacy of selected pediatric neurosurgical procedures. He serves as Director of the Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery Laboratory at Johns Hopkins and directs the Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery Fellowship. His lab focuses on developing novel instruments and surgical approaches. He has authored 190 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and published two textbooks. He has given approximately 330 national and international presentations and has been an invited visiting professor at 50 medical centers.

Scholarly publications, including peer-reviewed papers, books, and book chapters relevant to the history of functional neurosurgery for movement and psychiatric disorders, were reviewed, both concerning the pre-stereotactic as well as the stereotactic era. As far as possible, original documents were retrieved and scrutinized with respect to indications for surgery, the surgical methods, and the brain targets, in view of determining whether serendipitous discoveries and observations contributed to the proposal or establishment of a variety of functional neurosurgical procedures.

Serendipitous observations, some of which led to discoveries, continued to pop up all along the stereotactic lesional era, and even more during the modern DBS era, in part thanks to technological advances and advances in brain imaging. This, in turn, has led to consideration of potential new brain targets to treat various behavioral, neurological, and psychiatric disorders. As shown in Table 1, it seems that discoveries in functional neurosurgery occurred along different serendipitous journeys: clinical observations in general, intraoperative observations, observations on imaging studies, and pathological observations on autopsy.

Youssef, professor of neurosurgery and Skull Base Surgery director in the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, set out to fill the literary gap in his specialty.
