The Norwegian Constituent Assembly in Eidsvoll adopted and signed the Norwegian Constitution on May 16, 1814. The latter day is Norway's National Day, commemorating the foundation of the constitution. It is regarded as one of the most liberal and democratic constitutions in the world. It is Europe's fourth oldest written single-document national constitution, behind the Polish Constitution, the French Constitution of 1791, and the Spanish Constitution of 1812. The document is also the world's second oldest operating national constitution, behind the United States Constitution. The Storting enacted the most significant revisions since 1814 in May 2014, mainly by introducing human rights provisions.
