If you want a lightweight, compact accessory that keeps your hitch receiver clear for towing, choose TEMCo Industrial Universal 2; if you need a heavy-duty platform with a built-in bumper guard and adjustable height settings, choose OTHOWE Trailer Hitch Step.
• TEMCo Industrial Universal 2: Its biggest strength is the unique design that fits around your existing trailer hitch, allowing you to tow without removal; its trade-off is the lack of a wide platform or bumper protection features.
• OTHOWE Trailer Hitch Step: It offers a massive 350-pound weight capacity and functions as a rear bumper guard to prevent scratches; however, it completely occupies the hitch receiver, meaning you must remove it to tow a trailer.
• Who picks which: Choose the TEMCo for overlanding trips where you might need to detach quickly or keep the hitch free, and choose the OTHOWE if you park daily and need a stable step for loading gear or pets.
The TEMCo Industrial Universal 2 stands out because it solves a specific logistical headache that other steps ignore: how to access your vehicle roof or bed while still being able to tow a trailer without removing the step every time. This unit is engineered to fit around most standard 2-inch trailer hitches rather than replacing them. You install it directly onto the hitch receiver, but the structure wraps around the shank of your actual tow bar. This means you can leave it bolted on permanently, drive down the road with a trailer attached, and simply step up onto the platform whenever you need to reach cargo in the back of your SUV or truck.
This design makes it ideal for the adventurous driver who values versatility above all else. If you frequently switch between hauling cargo and towing boats, campers, or utility trailers, this is the only solution that lets you do both without wrestling with bolts and pins. The product is constructed from all-welded steel with a durable powder coat finish, ensuring it won't rust away after a season of off-road dust. The tightener mechanism is specifically designed to prevent rattling or wobbling, which is critical when driving on rough terrain where loose hardware can become a dangerous projectile.
However, this product is not for everyone. Because it is designed to wrap around an existing hitch, it does not offer the same structural footprint as a full-step replacement. It lacks the wide, flat surface area that some users prefer for standing while working on a vehicle. It also does not provide any protective function for your rear bumper itself; it is purely a step. If your primary goal is to protect your bumper from parking lot dings or to have a massive platform for kids to stand on safely, this unit might feel too utilitarian and narrow compared to a full-replacement option.

The OTHOWE Trailer Hitch Step is built for the user who prioritizes stability, safety, and dual-purpose functionality. That load capacity is substantial, making it safe for adults, seniors, children, and even large pets to use confidently. The platform is wider and flatter than many competitors, featuring hollow raised surface holes and non-slip plastic pads. These design choices are intentional for wet conditions; whether you are stepping into a muddy truck bed in the rain or climbing out of snow, the texture provides reliable traction that prevents slipping.
A major selling point here is the "Rear Bumper Guard" feature. Unlike simple steps that just let you climb up, this unit acts as a rugged shield. It absorbs minor impacts and defends against parking lot scratches, effectively protecting your vehicle's rear bumper from collision damage. This is a significant value-add for drivers who navigate tight spaces or drive through areas with low-hanging obstacles. Furthermore, the unit includes five adjustment holes, allowing you to set the ideal distance between the step and your rear bumper. This adjustability ensures a perfect fit for different truck beds or SUVs, eliminating gaps that could be dangerous or annoying.
The trade-off for this robust performance is the loss of towing capability. To install the OTHOWE, you must fully insert it into the 2-inch receiver, occupying the space entirely. You cannot attach a tow ball or a trailer hitch to it. If you plan to take your vehicle on long-distance overland expeditions where you might need to tow a small utility trailer behind you, this step becomes a liability unless you are willing to remove it every time you need to tow. It also comes with a lock pin to prevent theft, but the physical presence of the unit means it will block reverse sensors or license plates on some newer models, requiring careful verification before purchase.
• Best for towing compatibility → TEMCo Industrial Universal 2: It allows you to keep your trailer hitch installed and functional while using the step.
• Best for weather resistance → OTHOWE Trailer Hitch Step: The dual-stage textured black powder coating and anti-rust treatment are explicitly rated for severe weather and off-roading.
• Best for bumper protection → OTHOWE Trailer Hitch Step: It functions as a physical barrier against parking lot dings and impact damage.
• Best for quick setup → TEMCo Industrial Universal 2: No drilling required, and it avoids the hassle of removing the step when you need to tow.
• Best for adjustable fit → OTHOWE Trailer Hitch Step: Five adjustment holes allow you to customize the distance to match your specific vehicle's bumper.
• Best for safety traction → OTHOWE Trailer Hitch Step: The combination of non-slip pads and hollow raised holes offers superior grip in mud, rain, or snow.
• Best for minimalist design → TEMCo Industrial Universal 2: Its integrated bottle opener and compact form factor make it less obtrusive on the rear of the vehicle.
After weighing the specs and real-world applications, I would buy the OTHOWE Trailer Hitch Step for my daily vehicle and short-term overlanding needs. The 350-pound capacity and the integrated bumper guard offer a level of durability and protection that the TEMCo simply cannot match. While the TEMCo is clever for keeping the hitch free, the OTHOWE transforms the rear of the truck into a safer, more functional workspace. For serious overlanding where you park and stay put, the stability and width of the OTHOWE provide a much better experience for loading gear and managing camp chores. However, if your lifestyle involves constant towing, the TEMCo remains the smarter choice.
Absolutely. The TEMCo Industrial Universal 2 is designed to fit around your existing 2-inch trailer hitch, allowing you to tow without removing the step.
It fits any standard 2-inch receiver on trucks, SUVs, and vans, but you must check if the length blocks your license plate or affects reverse sensors on newer models like the 2025 Tacoma.
The OTHOWE features non-slip plastic pads and a hollow raised surface specifically designed to boost traction in rain, mud, or snow, whereas the TEMCo relies on a custom dimple pattern.
