How to Set Up and Connect to a Tekla Structures 16.0 License Server
Tekla Structures is a powerful software for designing and modeling complex structures. To use Tekla Structures, you need a valid license that is activated on a license server. The license server can be installed on a separate computer in your network, or on the same computer as Tekla Structures. In this article, we will explain how to install and activate the license server, and how to connect Tekla Structures to the license server.
Installing and Activating the License Server
To install the license server, you need to download the Tekla Structures License Server installation package from https://download.tekla.com/. You also need to have your Tekla Structures license file (*.lic) ready. The license file contains information about your license entitlements and is sent to you by email when you purchase or renew your Tekla Structures license.

Follow these steps to install and activate the license server:
Run the Tekla Structures License Server installation package and follow the instructions on the screen.
When prompted, browse to the location of your license file and select it.
Complete the installation and start the Tekla Structures License Server service.
Open a web browser and go to http://localhost:8888/ to access the Tekla Structures License Administration Tool.
Click on Activate Licenses and follow the instructions on the screen.
After activating your licenses, you can see them in the Licenses tab of the License Administration Tool.
Connecting Tekla Structures to the License Server
To connect Tekla Structures to the license server, you need to know the license server address. The license server address consists of a port number and a hostname, for example 27007@my_company_server. The port number is usually 27007, unless you have changed it during the license server installation. The hostname is the name of the computer where you have installed the license server.
If you have installed Tekla Structures and the license server on the same computer, you do not need to enter the license server address manually. Tekla Structures will automatically use the local license server when it starts.
If you have installed Tekla Structures and the license server on separate computers, you need to enter the license server address manually. You can do this in one of the following ways:
In the Tekla Structures user interface, go to File > Settings > Options > Licensing and enter the license server address in the Server field.
In Windows Registry, set the Server string value to the license server address in one of these keys, depending on your Tekla Structures version:
Tekla Structures 21.1 or older - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Tekla\License
Tekla Structures 2016-2018i - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Trimble\TeklaStructures\License
Tekla Structures 2019-2021 - HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Trimble\Tekla Structures\License
In Windows Environment Variables, create a new XS_LICENSE_SERVER_HOST variable in either user variables or system variables section and set its value to the license server address.
In a batch file, set XS_LICENSE_SERVER_HOST variable to the license server address and start TeklaStructures.exe from that batch file.
In a bypass.ini file, add set XS_LICENSE_SERVER_HOST=license_server_address line and create a shortcut for TeklaStructures.exe that points to that bypass.ini file.
For more details on these methods, see How to set a license server address without using the Tekla Structures user interface.
After entering the license server address, restart Tekla Structures and check that you can access your licenses from File > Settings > Licensing > Select Licenses.
