Basic aftercare for your bonded teeth can help to keep them looking attractive and natural. They’re affected more by staining and chipping compared to other treatments, so it’s important that an aftercare regime is maintained. Here are some tooth bonding aftercare tips to keep your bonded teeth in good condition:
1. Brushing twice a day
If you don’t do so already, you should look to brush your teeth twice a day, once in the morning and once at night. To ensure your teeth can be thoroughly cleaned, purchase a toothpaste with fluoride and aim to change your toothbrush every 3-4 months.
2. Interdental brushing
Brushing doesn’t necessarily clean all the surfaces of your teeth. To ensure they’re thoroughly cleaned you should use an interdental brush before your toothbrush. Aim to bring the interdental brush right down to the gum line to remove all the plaque and then continue to the next tooth.
3. Drink water after meals
There are plenty of sugars and acids contained in the food you eat and these can easily linger after your meal. To reduce acidity levels in your mouth and remove any leftover foods in your teeth, drink water after you eat.
4. Avoid products that easily stain your teeth
There are many aspects of our lifestyle that can contribute to staining teeth. Products containing tobacco, like smoking, can cause the teeth to discolour and turn yellow. This can also apply to drinking coffee regularly. Other foods and drinks to consider include wine, juice and even curries which contain high levels of artificial colours. Try to have these in moderation to reduce staining your bonded teeth. Composite bonding that has become stained or lost its lustre can often be refreshed with polishing by your dentist.
5. Reduce habits that can affect composite resin
Composite resin helps to provide your teeth with a natural look and improve their appearance. Bad habits such as biting your nails and biting on pens can easily wear down the resin on your teeth and reduce enamel over time. It can also make the resin prone to chipping, so try to avoid these habits.
6. Visit your Dental Hygienist
Regular visits to a hygienist help to keep your smile in tip top shape. In addition to the usual scale and polish, hygienists may also have special hygiene treatments, like airflow, to remove any surface staining.
