Menlo Park’s Guild Theatre, an integral part of the Peninsula performing arts scene since its transformation into a concert venue in 2022, is set to showcase local musical talent through its Local Sound Series. The upcoming performance on Jan. 18 will feature Belle Haven-raised bassist and blues vocalist, Frank Thibeaux.
Frank Thibeaux, currently residing in San Jose, has been a prominent figure in the local music scene for many years. Reflecting on his upbringing in Belle Haven and East Palo Alto, Thibeaux reminisces about a time when the community was predominantly Black, and music was abundant, with singing groups and bands on nearly every corner. This vibrant and competitive environment inspired him from a young age.
Thibeaux's musical journey began in the third grade when he formed his first singing group, The Junior Temptations, and later transitioned to the bass guitar. Recognizing the bass as the foundation of any band, he embraced its role, becoming not only a skilled bassist but also a leader and songwriter.
His musical interests transcend genres, incorporating blues, funk, R&B, rap, rock, and more. Thibeaux's extensive career includes touring Japan with his band Precision in the 1980s and collaborating with notable artists such as Herbie Hancock John Lee Hooker Jr., Kenny Neal, Sugar Pie Desanto, New Edition, Dr. Dre, Johnny Afro and MC Hammer.
Thibeaux has several releases and is currently working on a strictly blues album. His talent even at this stage of his career, is a source of pride for Thibeaux.
The Jan. 18 performance at the Guild Theatre holds special significance for Thibeaux, as it fulfills a longstanding desire to play at the venue. Dedicated to a close friend who encouraged him to perform at the Guild, Thibeaux anticipates an exceptional show, aiming to connect with the audience and honor his late friend's memory.
As the Guild Theatre continues its commitment to showcasing diverse local talents, the Jan. 18 performance featuring Frank Thibeaux is poised to be a celebration of his musical journey, a testament to the evolving music scene in the Bay Area, and a demonstration of the enduring power of music to inspire and engage audiences.
