New members have joined the team, old have graduated, and returning members now share their experience. The team has decided to try out a new drive system: Swerve Drive.
After kickoff, the team set off to build a metal frame, assemble a swerve drive, and design & build an arm.
As a team filled with students from different backgrounds and experience, each one got to help build the robot.
Abe Act I: The Tank
The robot had unintentionally two forms using a swerve drive system.
On the left, we arrived at the competition with an arm on our robot. The arm was not yet programmed.
On the right, we had to remove the arm for the rest of the competition. The arm had too much potential for certain rule violations.
Abe Act II: The Slab
Over three days, March 20-22, the team went to compete in the Central Illinois Regional in Peoria. The arm on the robot was built, tweaked, and ready to be programmed.
Due to the size of the arm being able to extend about 7ft, robot inspectors and competition staff were skeptical of whether or not the team could guarantee constraining the arm within rules.
By the end of the competition, the team played entirely defense, with the weight of the arm being an advantage while it was still on. The arm had to be removed towards the end of the competition.
