Welcome to my first entry here!
I am NOT yet in Alaska. Nope, I am still below the bible belt. I am prepping to leave in just 8 days! I am very excited for this next chapter of my life. I have been a secondary ELA teacher in Georgia.
I am moving to Nulato Alaska. This is a small village about 340 miles west of Fairbanks that is only accessible via air plane. You can learn more about Nulato here.
If you are interested in teaching in Alaska, I will have some resources for you on the home page.
The journey here was not a hard one. It seems to be pretty straight forward to transfer the teaching certificate over to Alaska. They desperately need teachers, so there are PLENTY of openings as well.
I went to the website for the Alaska Educator Retention and Recruitment Center. Here is where you can find job listings for ALL the school districts in Alaska. Most districts use this site for applications as well. The handful that do not are listed on the page. Many of their jobs are combined (ELA/History) and (Math/Science), as well as having multiple grade bands due to the small enrollment at each of these schools.
The school I will be teaching at only has about 50 kids enrolled. I will be teaching 6-12 for ELA and History. The actual classes are split between the middle school and high school students at my school, Demoski Wolves!
I think the hardest thing I have found information on is housing. Once I get to Nulato I will do a post that is just about the housing and what I think about it.
Until next time!
