Stand Up - Sit Down Activity:
The teacher provides a series of questions.
Students stand if they agree, and stay seated if they disagree.
The teacher calls on students who are sitting or standing to share why they have responded in that way.
This activity can require a bit of trust, it is best to practice the routine with 'low stakes' questions first, then build up to creating questions that connect to the learning intention and success criteria for the lesson.
Students tend to be more brave and honest about sharing their thinking and ideas once they realise that their teachers take their contributions seriously - even when they are being a bit playful and silly because they are nervous!
This strategy can be used during a lesson to get a read of what students have achieved, or understood. When used in this way, it can double as a brain break as well as a Universal Response tool! Boom!
