Pause and Post-it

This universal feedback strategy doubles as a brain break. After a period of time where students have been undertaking focused work, the teacher creates a pause and invites students to post what they are having success with, or what they are finding challenging.
Pause and post strategies help the teacher to catch what students are understanding at that point in the lesson - then they can invite students to tune in to a 5 minute mini-lesson to clarify confusion, or support students' confidence in taking on the challenges by modelling a strategy etc.
They can also use the feedback from the posts to draw attention to the thinking and learning behaviours that are providing students with learning success.
If you have a decent stash of post-it notes, get kids to post a response to a question that is going to give you some insight into what students are understanding or thinking.
You could get them to show their working out, list three words about what they've learned, or even to draw a picture - it will depend on your purpose and what you are wanting to catch about their learning at a chosen point in the lesson.
Then get them to post their repsonses on a window, wall or the whiteboard. Then you can take a look and respond to what you discover about the students learning.
Padlets can create a real time space to catch student thinking, to collaboratively share ideas, and to provide immediate feedback.
In the free version, you can only create a limited number of Padlets. However, you can download the Padlets that have been completed and then reuse or delete and recreate them. Some domains across the school may have a paid version.
This video is an example of how shared documents can also be used for group work and collaboration - sound quality is a bit sketchy.
Setting up a shared document for students to post their thinking to can also be a great way to catch student thinking and promote collective thinking.
You can create a set of columns for key questions and then invite students to add their ideas using these guiding frames for their thinking.
