Go, whoa, no!
The purpose of this strategy is to check students readiness to respond to the explicit instruction you have provided and begin rehearsing their own skills and developing their knowledge.
After providing explicit instructions for the student focused activities students will undertake in the lesson the teacher simply asks, are you ready, set and...
Then the students use the cards to indicate:
Go - I'm ready to work independently
Whoa - I need to clarify something before I feel confident to work independently
No - I'd like some direct support to help get me going.
Instead of using cards, you can use:
Thumb up = Go - I'm ready to work independently / I understand
Thumb sideways = Whoa - I need to clarify something before I feel confident I understand and/or am confident to work independently.
Thumb down = No - I'd like some direct support to help get me going and feel confident about my understanding.
