Stand Up - Sit Down Activity:
The teacher provides a series of questions.
Students stand if they agree, and stay seated if they disagree.
The teacher calls on students who are sitting or standing to share why they have responded in that way.
This activity can require a bit of trust, it is best to practice the routine with 'low stakes' questions first, then build up to creating questions that connect to the success criteria for the lesson.
Once students realise that their teachers take their feedback seriously, they tend to be more brave about honestly letting teachers know where they are at and what they don't yet understand or would like to challenge themselves to do.
This strategy can also be used during a lesson, to get a read of what students have achieved, or completed. When used in this way, it can double as a brain break and a Universal Response tool! Boom!
