A Mongolian Obstetrician and Gynecologist's Triumph Over Thyroid Cancer: A Journey at Changhua Christian Hospital
The testimony was spoken in August 2024
Dr. Mart Dashknuu, a Mongolian obstetrician and gynecologist shared her personal and spiritual journey after being diagnosed with thyroid cancer and undergoing surgery at Changhua Christian Hospital in Taiwan. Her testimony, shared during the International Christian Medical Association meeting in East Asia in Japan, not only details her medical experience but also highlights her profound spiritual awakening during this challenging period of her life.
A Journey Rooted in Faith
She began her testimony by reflecting on her background, apologizing for her limited proficiency in English, as she had studied medicine in Russian. Despite these language challenges, her life's mission has always been to share knowledge and teachings, particularly those of faith. She emphasized that her purpose is to serve others, whether through medicine or spirituality.
The Diagnosis
Her life took an unexpected turn in January 2018. During a medical mission trip to rural Uvurkhangai Province in Mongolia, where temperatures plummeted to minus 30 degrees Celsius, she stayed with a herder family in their ger (a traditional Mongolian yurt) and conducted medical check-ups. Before beginning their medical check-ups, they shared God’s love and the transformative power of accepting Christ.
After returning from the mission, she began to feel unwell. She noticed significant changes in her health, particularly an inability to lift her left shoulder. A simple check-up revealed small nodules in her thyroid, prompting her doctors to recommend further testing. An MRI suggested the possibility of malignancy.
When lab tests confirmed abnormally high thyroid hormone levels, she knew something was seriously wrong. The situation weighed heavily on her—she had always been the caregiver, not the patient. The prospect of surgery and a potential cancer diagnosis was overwhelming. The National Cancer Research Center in Mongolia planned to remove her thyroid and nearby lymph nodes.
Emotional Turmoil and Spiritual Awakening
The diagnosis and impending surgery left her emotionally drained. She described a period of deep despair, feeling disconnected from her work, family, and even her faith. Despite being surrounded by loved ones, she felt isolated in her fear and uncertainty.
One day, after her family left for work, she found herself alone. In this solitude, she turned to prayer—a practice she had neglected during her ordeal. She began listening to “Uzesgelentei,” a Mongolian Christian song, for three hours, from 9 a.m. to noon. By the time she could pray, she experienced a deep emotional release, crying out her fears and anxieties. By 3 p.m., she felt completely at peace and happy. In that moment, she felt a profound connection with God, whom she believed was listening to her pleas.
She vividly imagined Christ in her kitchen, comforting and guiding her through her pain. This visualization helped her confront her fears and gave her the strength to move forward.
The Surgery and Recovery
With renewed faith, she approached her surgery with a sense of calm and trust in the medical team at Changhua Christian Hospital, thanks to the assistance of Mongolian Christian doctor Altankhuayg. She cancelled her planned surgery in Mongolia and chose to undergo the procedure in Taiwan. The hospital not only provided her with excellent surgical care but also offered her a discount on the treatment.
The surgery was successful, involving only the removal of her thyroid. She was grateful not only for the medical treatment but also for the emotional and spiritual support she received during her recovery.
A New Perspective on Life
Her experience with thyroid cancer transformed her perspective on life and faith. She now sees her illness as a blessing in disguise, a way to reconnect with her spirituality and deepen her understanding of God’s presence in her life. She emphasized the importance of prayer and faith in overcoming difficult times, encouraging others to turn to their spiritual beliefs when faced with challenges.
She concluded her testimony by expressing gratitude to the medical team at Changhua Christian Hospital and to God for guiding her through this difficult journey. Her story is a powerful reminder of the strength that can be found in faith, even in the face of life-threatening illness.
