The transition to adulthood is a pivotal stage marked by new responsibilities and challenges, particularly for young adults navigating mental health issues. For many, the shift from Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) to Adult Mental Health Services (AMHS) is fraught with difficulties, often resulting in a significant drop in continued care. Research indicates that only about a quarter of young people who age out of CAMHS successfully transition to AMHS, leaving many without essential support (Appleton et al., 2019). This disconnect is often attributed to systemic flaws, including inadequate referrals, suboptimal transitional care, and a lack of guidance for service users. These gaps contribute to a crisis where transitional-age youth (TAY) are left without the mental health care they need during a critical developmental period.
This guide is a help for both upcoming therapists who want to expand their approach to how they operate AMHS through a more multicultural lens, as well as a guide to new TAYs who need help to better understand the process they can take to better understand the position they are in since the service is a brand new experience for them!
Some of the next steps with these guides is to better understand where you want to change your thoughts multicultural counseling. It is important to value all of these different steps when it comes to how both TAYs address their role in AHMS as well as the therapists role as well.
