I leave the truck and begin to make my way to town. I couldn't bring myself to take that truck, and I couldn't imagine leaving a family stranded out here. I don’t bother to pay attention to the road; I haven’t seen a moving car in hours. Some of the telephone poles are black at the top, and the transformers were blown out. Some of the boxes are gone completely.
“That’s odd,” I say as I keep walking on the road. There’s a long bend in the road, and I half pay attention as I try to think about what would cause the transformers to burn like that. I can only guess that maybe it’s a surge of power or a malfunction of some kind.
I hear the sound of birds chirping in the woods surrounding the road, and I focus on them to take my mind off the power lines. At least this place isn’t completely empty. I try to figure out which birds I’m hearing as I hear something new.

I look up just in time to see headlights bearing down on me.
