The only way to do this would be to completely and entirely stop using Windows Explorer, and use a custom shell to replace explorer completely. This means you would no longer have the usual start menu, explorer windows, etc, and would have to rely entirely on some other piece of software for browsing your file system. Some people do this, and there are replacements available, so if you really want to completely eliminate the windows taskbar, find and use one of these of your choice. There is already a SuperUser question discussing the various options.

In order to completely replace explorer, and have your replacement be the default shell which opens up when you log in, create a REG_SZ value called Shell in [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon] using the registry editor. This will completely replace explorer for your account, making it unnecessary to use any taskbar hiding/killing techniques.

Taskbar Magic Download

I had the exact opposite issue as you, my taskbar was gone (it's an embedded version for a hosted kiosk, but I was also using the machine for alternate reasons so I needed the taskbar back) and realized that Taskbar Magic is why I couldn't get my taskbar. Start menu still works if you hit the Windows key, and everything else still works fine, the taskbar is just perma-disabled.

Here be my solution (it hides rather than replaces or removes the native taskbar - this allows it work with programs that have a dependency on the native taskbar, such as display fusions taskbar). -apps/11066-disable-taskbar-always-top.html#post275120

If you move the taskbar to the left or right edge prior to doing the above steps, you don't get the stupid auto-hide line at the top or bottom of Goggle Chrome. Since the native taskbar is not mouse sensitive anymore, it won't impact your use of hot corners, or multi monitors (for instance i have the native taskbar on the left of my middle monitor, and it does not popup when moving between monitors using the steps in this post).

Allows you to run alternative taskbars that are dependent on keeping the native taskbar functional (for instance Display Fusion's Multi-Monitor Taskbar + Settings > Advanced Settings > Show On All Montiors)

Download and run this registry edit to prevent balloon notification popups from the native taskbar/system tray:

Ā Notifications - Enable or Disable Message Balloons - Windows 7 Help Forums

Ā (You can open this in notepad to see what changes it will make prior to installing it, if you want).

I solved the problem myself with "Buttery Taskbar", which works in a similar way to Taskbar Eliminator and Taskbar Hider. However, it constantly keeps the taskbar hidden, meaning, the taskbar should not reappear due to alerts etc.

Taskbar Eliminator.win7

This is a reg hack - it's an xp and controls have changed a bit, i have not tried it on xp. I have checked it out on my win7 it required the second hack and then i was not sure which option as the numbers were different. Best practice is to backup the reg before. Then try removing each one, one by one.

Remove the taskbar in Windows

The comments below this article have more ways to remove the xp taskbar including this program kang-bt/removes t.bar sorry all xp and most where 'anonymous'

How to Auto Hide Taskbar in Windows 10/8/7

To do this, right-click on the taskbar and unlock the taskbar.

Again right-click and select Taskbar Properties. Under Taskbar tab, check the Auto-hide the taskbar setting. Click Apply > OK.

via Group Policy

via Group Policy, Run gpedit.msc to open Group Policy Editor and navigate to the following setting:User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Task Bar

Using hotkey

Buttons with modifier keys still work. Pressing a modifier key will cause those buttons to appear on taskbar. Switching screens or apps doesn't help, even if app has separate config. The system buttons are always shown on the taskbar unless a modifier key is held down.

Description of the issue:

I have dual monitor setup and for some reason when i launch any game in full screen on my main monitor there is bright pulsating brave notification on second monitor that wont go away until switch off fullscreen in game

Steps to Reproduce (add as many as necessary): 1. 2. 3.

Have 2 monitors

On secondary monitor launch a twitch stream with brave window fully extended

On primary monitor launch a game and switch it to be display in fullscrren mode (black desert online in my cause)

When game launches in fullcreen mode there will be pulsating brave icon on windows taskbar on secondary monitor

I dont have any special twitch notification enabled. I tested with other games and sites anyway and this notification shows up with any site opened. I just upgraded my windows 10 2 days ago and guessing windows just doesnt like it as in windows 8 compatibility mode this notification doesnt show up. For now i just disabled windows taskbar on second screen for now as nothing i tried worked

Taskbar Hide is a utility tool that helps you hide program windows in the simplest way possible. It will reduce the applications in the tray and keep the clutter of icons in the taskbar to a minimum. You will be able to hide your taskbar or any part of it using this lightweight program too. You can even maximize or minimize either of your applications' windows or browsers' windows such as Internet Explorer to your system tray.

The Windows task bar is in itself a minimalist solution to the problem of a usable GUI OS. However it is not everyone's favorite way, and it shouldn't have to be. In Vista they have made it real tricky to remove the Windows taskbar all together.

To do this right-click on an empty part of the taskbar and click on "properties". A new window will appear and there will be a check list. Check off "Auto-hide the taskbar" (unchecked to remove this feature).

If you are looking for a replacement, the free version of this program can just simply hide the taskbar while also providing you with a shortcut system. The Pro version actually gives you the option to use it in replacement of the taskbar.

Download and unzip it to the directory of your choice (most likely out of the way). Follow the directions for option number one I wrote about. Open up "taskbar magic.exe" and boom it will be gone. If you wish to allocate space for your task bar replacement if you have one, press CTRL + ALT + ESC. That gives you the option to chose what side of the screen you want to allocate and you can change the amount by pixels

There you have it, the three best ways I have found to remove Vista taskbar. All of them but the built in one require a program running in the background. Do you know of any better ones? Perhaps a registry hack? Let us know in the comments.

When the aforementioned problem happens, though, the pop-up will only appear briefly, or not appear at all, and what I get is a thin blue bar over the icon. The Clipboard taunts me: the popup appears, but as soon as I move the mouse over it, the popup goes away, back to the blue line over the icon on the taskbar.

So whenever I interact with the taskbar - clicking the application launcher or any of the widgets on my taskbar, the entire system freezes for ~10 seconds and my laptop fans start spinning. Also some graphical glitches happen, this is what the application launcher looks like after it finally opens up. Any ideas?

Finally, I know about the Windows 7 Taskbar Shortcuts where Win+number (1-9) starts the application pinned to the taskbar in that position, or switches to that program. This is what inspired the idea, I just find using keywords easier, and I use PortableApps which do not pin nicely to the taskbar.

After a bit of research, I can, probably, safely say there is no such thing as hiding app from taskbar in gtk (in the sense of cross-platform supported feature).

Then, if you enable the taskbar autohide to use with nircmd (so Windows maximise fullscreen properly), the problem is that the taskbar automatically hides when you click on the screen which is pointless since the entire idea here is to have manual control via hotkey(s) to show or hide the Windows taskbar. In other words, it defeats the purpose to be forced to enable the built-in Windows taskbar autohide feature and then use nircmd.exe to hide/show/toggle the Shell_TrayWnd

Marvelous! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I looked at TaskbarHide and Taskbar Magic, etc., but found them overkill for just one function that I wanted, to hide (kill) the taskbar.

This NirCmd works, and I can trigger the hide or show taskbar command with a keyboard shortcut using Autohotkey.

Muchas gracias!

Agree with the others, this does nothing useful unless your happy with having the taskbar space un-usable by applications. Having to turn on the auto taskbar hide in Windows makes this utility pointless.

That said, there are a few things that MagicOS 7.1 does well, and one of those is multitasking. It's easy to set up multi-window mode on the inner screen, and you can use floating windows as well. While there isn't a taskbar, you can pull up a sidebar with a long press of the back gesture, and you can customize it.

Thanks for the reply. The magic lamp effect is fine, it's the scale down effect that's missing and it's only missing for maximized windows so that's strange.

The scale down effect works fine on smaller windows for some reason. It's weird, wasn't happening before really.

I reached out to a former colleague of mine who is now a program manager at Microsoft. We discussed this issue for quite some time, and it basically ended up with him recommending me to submit a so called Microsoft Edge User Voice where I should describe the issue. Someone had beat me to it, a User Voice for the issue had already been submitted here. Please cast your vote, we need to make Microsoft aware of this issue and hopefully make them change this unusual behavior of creating pinned taskbar shortcuts. Or at least give us a way to prevent the pinned taskbar shortcut from appearing, in both Windows Server and Windows 10. 2351a5e196
