Verse 1:
On a chilly morning one day
In the desert far away
One monk went to the garden
As usual to pray
He saw a strange glow
A grape vine hanging low
But this was not the season
For any grapes to grow
Refrain 1:
(The monk didn’t wait
Rushed to the monastery’s gate) x2
(And gave it to the Abbott
St Macarius the Great) x2
Verse 2:
St. Macarius said who
Should I give this vine to?
Finally he walked to the cell
Of the eldest monk he knew
He said take this my dear
You are the eldest here
And when you get the blessing
We’ll all be of good cheer
Refrain 2:
(The monk reluctantly
Took it but so quickly) x2
(Thought how can I enjoy it
When my brothers sleep hungry) x2
Verse 3:
He gave it to the monk next door
And it went from door to door
It came back to the abbot
At the end of its tour
St Macarius the Great
He rose up right away
Asking all the monks to gather
And hear what he had to say
Refrain 3:
(He said I clearly see
Seeds of love growing here) x2
(And this grape vine
Is my sure sign) x2
Refrain 4:
(Our Lord made us aware
We are light of the world) x2
(And when it’s shining bright
It can never ever hide) x2
