Tangled Ever After is a 2012 six-minute American animated short film written and directed by Nathan Greno and Byron Howard,[1] serving as a follow-up to the 2010 Walt Disney Animation Studios film Tangled. It premiered in theaters on January 13, 2012, before the 3D theatrical re-release of Beauty and the Beast,[2] and on Disney Channel followed by the premiere of The Princess and the Frog on March 23, 2012.[3] The short was later, in fall 2012, included as a bonus feature on the Diamond Edition of Cinderella,[4][5] and was also released three years later, on the Walt Disney Animation Studios Short Films Collection Blu-ray on August 18, 2015.[6] The short is also available as a stand-alone download on iTunes.

The story of the short, counting also the TV series produced 5 years later (otherwise it would take place just after the original film as originally intended), picks up approximately three years after the events of Tangled, explored throughout Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure, from the television film, Tangled: Before Ever After to the three-part series finale, "Plus est en Vous". In the short, the kingdom prepares for the long-awaited royal wedding of Rapunzel and Eugene Fitzherbert. However, chameleon Pascal and horse Maximus lose the wedding rings, triggering a frenzied search to retrieve them.

On Rapunzel's and Eugene's wedding day, Pascal and Maximus are the ring bearers and are spreading the flowers. When the priest starts talking, one of the flowers falls and Maximus sniffs it and he sneezes causing the rings to be launched outside of the castle. While in shock, the priest asks them for the rings, only to find them gone. The Queen complains that it was her grandmother's wedding rings and one of the guards says that the kingdom is lost. This causes a lot of chaos around the kingdom and explosions start to happen, but it was revealed to be Maximus' daydream. With more time, they go after the rings only to be launched in two directions.

One of them lands in a pot of soup and Pascal goes after it. When coming out, he causes chaos around the tables and finally retrieves the ring, only to find his tongue stuck in ice. Meanwhile, Maximus runs after the other ring, but he runs into shoes, make-up, hats and dresses and he is now dressed as a lady. A male horse mistakes Maximus for a female and falls in love with him, but he kicks him and goes after the ring. Pascal finally gets his tongue off the ice, but he lands on a waiter's foot, causing him to drop the lintels on the ice and it launches into the air. Maximus manages to retrieve the other ring, but the ice sculpture lands on a catapult he is sitting on and is launched into the air and passes the windows where the ceremony is. He lands in a carriage and goes after the ring.

Meanwhile, Pascal goes after the ring and it lands on a girl's lantern. He chases after it, only for him to be shocked when he finds out it is in hundreds of lanterns. Maximus manages to retrieve the ring, but his face gets knocked by several frying pans before hitting a giant frying pan. This causes a few residents to think it was a gong and they release the doves and the lanterns. Pascal finally finds the ring, but realizes he is very high. Meanwhile, the carriage Maximus is in finally stops and is launched into the air (passing Pascal, but he doesn't know that and looks at the camera). He lands on a decoration and a flock of doves passes Pascal, causing him to lose the ring. It hits a wind vane, a fountain, a decoration and a hook and finally lands on a dove's foot.

Maximus hits the ground, but the hook that the ring landed on causes barrels of juice to chase Maximus and Pascal. When coming to a dead end, Maximus uses one of the decorations as a slingshot and launches them into the air for Pascal to grab the ring. Unfortunately, he misses, but he uses his tongue to grab it. Now with both rings secured, they land in a tar factory. Just as the priest finishes, he asks for the ring, only to find Pascal and Maximus covered in tar and they hand them the rings. The priest declares them husband and wife and they kiss. Just as everybody cheers, Maximus accidentally causes the cake trolley to roll out of the castle.

Tangled Ever After was first released on Cinderella: Diamond Edition on October 2, 2012.[4][5] It was also later released on the Walt Disney Animation Studios Short Films Collection Blu-ray on August 18, 2015.[6]

The short starts with the film narrated by Eugene, similar to the first story, proclaiming dramatically that "This is the day my life ended". Rapunzel corrects him and he then admits that it was the best day of his life. Rapunzel and Eugene (Flynn Rider) are about to be married. The entire kingdom prepares for what Eugene and Rapunzel state is the biggest wedding the kingdom has ever seen and that everything was perfect and went as planned, except for two things: Eugene's nose, once again, not properly drawn and Pascal and Maximus losing their wedding rings.

The next scene shifts to a chapel, with the entire kingdom, including Rapunzel's parents, the thugs, and the Stabbington Brothers (in chains) attending; Pascal as the "flower girl" and Maximus as the "best man"; and Eugene awaiting Rapunzel's arrival. Rapunzel enters with her father leading her and wearing a beautiful wedding dress instead of a long train from back of her skirt with a long veil representing her previously long hair. As the couple's marriage is officiated by a religious official, Maximus inhales one of Pascal's flowers and sneezes, causing them to lose the wedding rings. Images pop into their head of Eugene and Rapunzel's surprised and horrified faces; the Queen angered that they had lost her grandmother's wedding rings; a soldier proclaiming that the kingdom is lost; and the kingdom in the ensuing chaos that leads to an explosion that destroys everything.

The two then sneak out in pursuit of the rings to prevent their vision from happening. The two rings are separated in two parts of the kingdom and Maximus and Pascal decide to separate to find them before the ceremony ends. Pascal finds a ring in a punch bowl but frightens the villagers who attempt to kill him, resulting in mass destruction of the dining preparations and Pascal's tongue stuck on an ice sculpture of the short thug dressed as Cupid, with the wedding ring on his tongue. Meanwhile, Maximus's pursuit leads to the incidental destruction of several commemorative booths selling dresses, shoes, makeup, and hats and resulting in his appearance being altered to that of a female horse, and being hit on by a male horse. He knocks out the male horse and then finds the ring underneath a flower cart.

After he retrieves the ring, Pascal manages to separate himself from the ice sculpture, only to lose the wedding ring he found and cause a man to trip and land on the table with the ice sculpture. The ice sculpture hurdles into the air and lands on a cart Maximus is sitting on, causing him to hurdle into the air and lose the wedding ring he found as well. Using Rapunzel's and Eugene's wedding carriage, he chases after the ring but is hit by an array of frying pans before hitting the Frying Pan Warehouse sign. A group of servants mistakes it for a gong ringing as a signal to release an enormous cage full of doves. Another servant takes this as a sign to release a bunch of floating lanterns that were supposed to be released in honor of Eugene's and Rapunzel's marriage.

Pascal finds the other wedding ring in one of the numerous sky lanterns that Maximus just released, but unfortunately finds himself hundreds of feet above the ground. Pascal slips and falls to the earth and the ring ends up in the talons of a dove. The wayward carriage hits the sidewalk and sends Maximus hurtling in the air where he lands on Rapunzel's and Eugene's banner. Maximus slips off the banner, tearing it down the middle and defacing poor Eugene's nose even further. Maximus lands on an enormous pyramid of wine barrels busting them all open, unleashing a flood throughout the kingdom streets. As Pascal lands in the street in the path of a torrent of wine, Maximus scoops him up and sprints off to escape from the flood.

Up ahead, startled cook fumbles with some utensils as he runs out of the way, and accidentally sets an entire food cart ablaze, creating a fiery roadblock in their path. Thinking fast, Maximus jumps and grabs an overhanging banner rope and flings himself and Pascal into the air once again and they soar over the fire which is put out by the wine. Maximus hurls Pascal after the ring-toting dove, and although he misses, Pascal retrieves the ring with his tongue. The two fall into a building that makes and stores tar.

They arrive just in time to deliver the rings while shocking everyone by their grotesque appearances as the result of their chases for the rings. Eugene nervously takes the rings and exchanges them with Rapunzel, although neither of them can take their eyes off the haggard duo. Eugene and Rapunzel kiss after finally being pronounced as a married couple, and everyone from the first film cheers. As Maximus and Pascal relax after the tiring chase for the rings, they accidentally bump into the cart carrying the wedding cake, causing it to roll away towards the door. Just as the cake disappears down the hall, Eugene proclaims, "So, who wants a piece of cake?"

Tangled Before Ever After takes place before the wedding (about six months before in Tangled time). You get the feeling that Rapunzel loves her new life but still feels a little bit like a captive. Part of the story is that everyone in the film, including the king and queen, have to learn how to live with Rapunzel after almost 18 years of her being missing. More importantly, Rapunzel has to learn how to be a princess despite her desire to be free. She loves her life but still longs for some semblance of freedom.

I enjoyed the art style but it took a little while to get used to it, especially after the feature film. It was very reminiscent of Mary Blair and the Johnny Appleseed style of she created. It did seem to work well with the story as well as the characters. 152ee80cbc
