Philippine Cultural College - Main held the first-ever virtual United Nations Day celebration last October 29, 2021. The students’ skills were showcased through works that reflected the ethos of the UN's theme of International Year of Peace and Trust.
The FilSocMaTLE Department, headed by Mr. Daryl B. Teves, was at the helm of organizing the ceremony. The day’s activities were split into two sessions; one for the Grades 5-8 students in the morning, and another one for the Grades 9-12 students in the afternoon.
The first session was hosted by John Mathew C. Cabiltes of 12A-ABM and was held entirely in Filipino. It started at 7:30 in the morning and featured three contests: Grades 5-6’s Likhapayapaan: Pagbuo ng Poster, Grade 7’s Likhadbokasiya: Pagbuo ng Infomercial, and Grade 8’s Lakbay-daigdig sa Tiktok.
The AM program also aired three videos, two of which were compiled from the outputs of the Grades 1-4 students. The first video was dedicated to the frontliners of this pandemic, wherein the pupils wore outfits reflective of the different frontliners during this pandemic. The second video featured students creating and coloring the various flags of member countries of the United Nations. Mr. Leonard Catubay also presented the importance of the United Nations. The morning event concluded with the final video, a version of Ryan Cayabyab's song "We Heal as One", rendered by a group of prominent Filipino singers.
The second session, which was completely in English, was hosted by Clark Angelo Siao of 12C-STEM. It began at 12:30 p.m. and included two contests: Grades 9-10’s Humans of the United Nations and Grades 11-12’s TED-Ed PCC Way.
The PM program also featured two videos. The first video played at the beginning of the program was entitled Heal the World. It depicted the world’s current crises and emphasized the need to unite against the crises. The second video was a music video of the song We Are The World, which showed a montage of photos from administrators, teachers, and Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students’ quotes on peace and trust. Teves expressed the importance of this year’s UN Celebration. “We believe that organizing such events and competitions uphold the true essence of the United Nations and what it stands for, showing our support and oneness with its cause. This is not just to introduce the facts and information, but also to highlight the main virtues of this year’s theme: PEACE and TRUST. These have become significant in our pursuit of unity.” He also added, “Despite living in a world of different races, cultures, beliefs, and worldviews, we continuously prove that these are not insurmountable odds for us to bridge one another. We must always remember that cooperation that resonates from trust results in unity bound by peace. All of these, we have witnessed today.”
This event reemphasized and reiterated the significance of peace and trust in the UN’s mission of uniting the world through non-violent means.
