Innovation and creativity came into the spotlight on the second day of this year’s academic week when the ScInovation 2021 and the Sci-Spectacular 2.0, both hosted by the Science Department, were held on January 26, 2021.
The ScInovation 2021 was held in the morning where the Grade 6 pupils were tasked to develop inventions that might address problems in their community. Pupils were encouraged to make use of recyclable materials, such as newspapers, bottles, and foil. The judges for the competition were Vice President Dr. Sining Kotah, English Supervisor and Science Coordinator Mrs. Ma. Ruby Gaad, and former PCC science teacher Mr. Mark Tabor.
The grade six finalists were asked by the panel of judges several questions after they had presented their science innovations. They were judged not only by the quality and the creativity of their project, but also by the way they presented their work and answered the questions. Winners of the ScInovation 2021 are as follows:
First Place - Richard Dong (6A) - Incrediblocks
Second Place - Vaughn Russell Tabuzo (6B) - RecycLAMP
Third Place - Jose Antonio De Leon (6B) - Free Energy Water Pump
In the afternoon, the Sci-Spectacular 2.0 was held for the Grades 4 and 5 pupils. Science teachers prepared hands-on activities for the pupils, like how to make slime and how to make a lava lamp using household items. The science behind both activities was explained by the Science Department teachers. Demonstrations were also made, such as showing how gravity worked as a marble was rolled down a prepared track, and explaining the processes of the digestive system. The science behind some "magic" tricks was also shown by some SHS STEM students.
By the end of the program, the Grade 4 to 6 pupils could surely say, “It’s not magic, it’s science!”
