Read Aloud Day in PCC Kindergarten Celebrated
March 4, 2021
The Kinder Department is one with the world in celebrating World Read Aloud 2021. It is a worldwide program which includes the pleasure and power of reading and sharing stories. Why read aloud in Kinder? Simply because we believe that by reading aloud, children will eventually be motivated to read on their own. Aside from developing their listening skill and improving their vocabulary and comprehension, they will also be developing their imagination as they learn important lessons in life.
It was a delight to share stories with enthusiastic readers. On February 26, at 10:00 am, all kindergartners were gathered on VooV to listen to four read-alouds. Four selected parents, together with their children, took turns to read us stories of their choice.
First off was “The Little Red Hen” from Pre-kinder A. This is a story of a hard-working hen who discovers grains of wheat and asks her friends to help her plant, harvest, mill, and bake them into bread. But all her friends refused. Finally, when her task was done, she asked her friends who would help her eat the bread, they all agreed; however, the hen rebuffed them, stating that since she made the bread herself, she would have to eat it all by herself.
This story was presented through a puppet show by Nicolas Russell Quelnan, supported by his mom, Ms. Jane Quelnan, brother Joaquin, and sisters, Carissa and Colline. Viewers were awed as they learned the importance of helping one another.
Next story was “The Tortoise and the Hare” from Pre-Kinder B. This was a story about an arrogant hare who ridiculed a slow moving tortoise. Tired of the hare’s behaviour, the Tortoise challenged him to a race. The hare soon left the tortoise behind and confident of winning, took a nap midway through the race. The Tortoise meanwhile kept going slowly but steadily, and, after a time, passed the place where the Hare was sleeping. But the Hare slept on very peacefully; and when at last he did wake up, the Tortoise was near the goal.
This story was read aloud by Jio Gabriel Ching’s mom, Ms. Debby Gayle Ching, who enlightened the viewers with her voice variations like pitch, tone, pace, and volume. At the same time, children were shown the advantage of doing things slowly and steadily rather than by acting quickly and carelessly.
The third story was “The Greedy Python” from Kinder A. This story was about a greedy snake who ate all the animals in sight. Even when he got sick and spat them out, he had not learned his lesson. In the end, the snake saw his own tail and ate himself.
Presented by Donald Kyrie Ang with the help of a relative, they delivered this humorous story about manners, respect, and friendship. Another important lesson learned was never to take more than what we actually needed.
The last story was “The Dentist and the Crocodile” from Kinder B. It was a funny story about a crocodile who didn’t want to go to the dentist and a dentist who didn’t really want to treat the crocodile. Both characters were dreading each other and spoke from their own perspectives; repeating almost exactly what the other one was thinking.
This story was made more fun by Stacey Reana Co as the dentist and cousin Aldrich as the crocodile. They made dentists seem less scary for the viewers, aside from teaching them empathy.
What a way to culminate the Read Aloud month! Indeed, for our kindergarteners, every day is a read aloud day!
Enjoy reading, everyone!
