Philippine Cultural College - Manila held its annual United Nations (UN) Celebration program last October 28, 2022 via Zoom Video Conferencing.
This program was spearheaded by the FilSocMATLE department. This year, there were 2 parts to this program; the elementary (Grades 4 to 6) program started at 8:00 am, followed by the high school program, which started at 10 am.
The program started with a song entitled "Isang Mundo, Isang Awit" by Ms. Jonalyn Viray. This program was introduced with two emcees, namely Mrs. Mariquin Najito and Mrs. Jenny Gimao, both Araling Panlipunan Teachers. The elementary program consisted of games specifically made for the elementary students. The game was introduced by Mr. John Leo Lavendia, it consisted of facts about the United Nation titled “GAME KA NA BA?”. The next game on the program was introduced by Mrs. Mikee Sebil, which was called “4 pics 1 word”. It was all about the objectives and goals of the United Nations.
After the games, a series of video presentations was presented, where the elementary students made flags and paper dolls of countries that formed the United Nations. After that, the students played the next game with Mrs. Eula Mae Turningan called “Name it, Win it”. It introduced some member countries of the United Nations with some facts about those countries. After the games were finished, it was followed by a performance of Yixia Herman from grade (5A) singing the song entitled "Tomorrow will be Better". To officially end the first part of the program, Mr. Daryl Teves gave his ending speech.
The second part of the program started with the emcee Ms. Christine Berin introducing the United Nations. After that, she gave the stage to our president, Dr. Polly W. Sy for her welcoming speech. She stated that “In line with this year’s theme, to address this eroding public trust in our various institutions, we are holding this activity. Literacy truly begins at home, but it is the task of the school to follow through, strengthen it, and impress its importance upon students.” Then, Dr. Kotah gave her cheerful welcoming remarks, “Remember that we, ourselves, are the reason why this world will be a peaceful and trusting place to live. Just like we can also be the very reason why it is full of hatred and suspicion. So we have to play our role as citizens of this world very well, and do our responsibilities very well. Then, by that time, we shall be able to find a better world for all of us to live in.”
The resource speaker for the said program, Ms. Kai N. Pajutagana, is a graduate of the National Teachers College with a degree in Bachelor of Secondary Education, major in English, and is currently finishing her master’s degree in education in the same major and institution. She is a licensed professional teacher, with over seven years of experience in the academe. She was a former general education college faculty member at Colegio De San Lorenzo where she worked as the coordinator for academic services. Currently, she works in the Department of Education as a junior high school teacher at Novaliches High School.
The talk was all about “Strengthening the Media and Information Literacy through Fact-checking”, which delved into spotting fake news and real facts, as well as differentiating misinformation and disinformation. She also discussed the basics of fact-checking with tips such as identifying sources, practicing the VIA (Verification, Independence, and Accountability), data triangulation, reading beyond the headlines, and checking biases. The discussion ended with a reminder–”no matter how cliché it may seem, one should always think before he clicks”.
Finally, the discussion was followed by the presentation of the different UN countries which included China, Egypt, Philippines, Kenya, Mexico, South Korea, and Saudi Arabia. To end the program, Mr. Daryl Teves gave his closing remarks, “Verify before you react, think before you click, and let us give peace and love to one another”.
