by John Mathew Cabiltes (12A - ABM) | December 16, 2021
Philippine Cultural College - Main championed books in its first-ever celebration of the National Book Month held online last November 25, 2021. The said endeavor was intended by the government to promote public libraries as well as to inspire reading and literacy among Filipinos.
School librarian Mr. Robert Raymond Santos, together with the English Department, headed by Mrs. Glenda Y. Sia, arranged the school's celebration where the program was duly divided into two portions: one for the elementary students in the morning and another one for the high school students in the afternoon. The day was jam-packed with exciting competitions and dynamic segments with the theme Outcomes, Outreach, Outstanding: Libraries Beyond Boundaries.
The first session was hosted by Mr. Jeruel Parohinog where a competition was held for Grades 5 to 6 students with the title Elementary Digital Poster Presentation. The grade school session also had a Character Parade and a Home Library Tour. Through TikTok, students from Grades 1-3 portrayed the magnificent world of literature with unmatched outfits for the Character Parade. This segment depicted several iconic characters in mainstream pop culture, ranging from Squid Game to Disney. Then, as part of the Home Library Tour, the audience was allowed to take a look inside selected elementary students' and teachers' home libraries and collections of books.
The second portion was anchored by Mr. Raymond Robert Santos, the school's Librarian and English teacher Ms. Christine Joy Estrella. It began at 1:00 PM in the afternoon and consisted of two competitions: Grades 7-8's Digital Poster Presentation and Grade 11's Tandem Story-Scene Reenactment. The Digital Poster Presentation had Grade 7 and 8 students create artworks based on the given theme of this year, while the Tandem Story-Scene Reenactment competition staged Grade 11's students' prowess in acting and editing as they portrayed renowned and classic film sequences.
Two video presentations were also presented, compiled from students, teachers, and supervisors. The first video allowed chosen high school students and teachers to share a book they would recommend to everyone. In this, they described the elements of the text and how it made a significant impact on their lives, ultimately engaging the student body to read more. The second video showcased home libraries in a supportive and positive fashion. In this segment, carefully selected students and teachers demonstrated how they organized their bookshelves, and shared the various advantages of having a library, and the joy that reading provided them.
