TONDO, MANILA – The English Department successfully opened its English Relaunch Program on August 1, 2025, at the Philippine Cultural College (Manila) Auditorium. The program integrated elements of artificial intelligence, cosplay, and live performances to foster reading and speaking skills among PCCians.
The program, hosted by Margaux Lily Ong (4B) and Jio Gabriel Ching (4A), began with a parade of students dressed as popular literary characters, who walked through the third-floor corridor for grade school pupils to see. High school students attended the English relaunch program in person, while grade school pupils watched live via Zoom coverage inside their classrooms.
In her opening remarks, PCC Vice President Dr. Sining Marcos Kotah challenged PCCians with the phrase, “Read to Lead,” and asked them to recall what they would write in their “blank book” for the school year 2025-2026.
Next, Ms. Arianne Merry Marcaida facilitated a literature-based question-and-answer segment to high school students tailored to their grade levels. The Q&A was followed by performance skits from various grade levels. Patrick Ryan Yan (2B) recited a poem, Matthew James Unas (4A) narrated Aesop’s fable “The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse,” while Ivana Simone Shi (12A) and Kristel Ann Wang (12A) performed their interpretation of the tale “The Golden Finger.”
After the performances, Mrs. Rose Halili Tabuzo, English High School Teacher, announced the “Caught Reading in English” (CREP) and “Caught Speaking in English” (CSEP) Programs, which reward PCCians who are seen reading and speaking in English.
Additionally, Mrs. Serapia Fornal Mabazza, English High School Teacher, introduced the “SmartRead Program,” featuring Book Talk, Free Talk, and Celebrity Reading to encourage students to explore literature. Finally, Mr. Winston Gangan, English Grade School Teacher, concluded the announcements by detailing the “Silent Uninterrupted Reading Fun” (SURF) Program, a 15-minute reading program designed to encourage PCCians to read age-appropriate books. The books may be either fiction or nonfiction, provided that these are within or higher than the Lexile level of the students.
The program concluded with a flash mob dance by the English Department and selected PCCians, with each dancer holding a book to symbolize the idea of “moving together through reading.”
“No matter how advanced our technology becomes, it will never replace one thing that we are capable of—our imagination,” said Mr. Michael Adlai Almero, English Department Assistant and High School Teacher, in his closing speech. The relaunch aims to show PCCians that reading opens new opportunities and helps them step confidently into the future.
