The Science Department commenced Philippine Cultural College - Manila’s celebration of the National Science and Technology Month with the theme “Agham at Teknolohiya: Tugon sa Hamon ng Panahon” last November 5, 2021, through a webinar entitled “Waste Management Under COVID-19: Challenges and Solutions.”
Dr. Jonas Feliciano Domingo, Education Program Supervisor in charge of the Learning Resource Management Section (LRMS) of Schools Division Office-San Juan City was the guest speaker of the webinar, wherein approximately 500 people, consisting of PCC’s academic and non-academic staff, as well as Grades 5 to 12 students attended.
Dr. Domingo discussed the growing problem of waste management and its relation to the current pandemic. Placing emphasis on the challenges and solutions to waste management, he enumerated a number of practical tips and methods individual students, families, communities, and the nation can undertake to contribute to, if not zero, at least fewer wastes.
"The continued implementation of improper disposal of wastes is one of the factors that can disrupt biodiversity and ecosystems,” said Dr. Domingo. “The build-up of excessive waste is also a cause of disasters that threaten human lives, such as flooding and disease transmissions,“ he added.
The webinar wrapped up with an open forum where students clarified the questions that they had and a “Myth or Fact” interactive game to test whether or not the students were able to retain some knowledge. These were facilitated by Science teachers Mrs. Lea Torres and Ms. Rocel Verzosa, respectively.
With the celebration of the National Science and Technology Month, PCC also recognizes the importance of emphasizing the role of science and research in addressing the present global challenges and issues through creative, ingenious, and innovative means.
