As part of its usual practice in the Parent-Teacher Conference, Philippine Cultural College Manila hosted a webinar entitled "How Parents Adapt to the Online Education in the New Normal,” where psycho-spiritual therapist and counselor Mrs. Oonah Lagrimas-Castillo delivered a lecture on November 21.
Mrs. Castillo is the vice-president of the Philippine Association of Christian Counselors, a certificated mental health first aider at the National Council for Behavioral Mental Health - Mental Health First Aid USA. She is also a psycho-spiritual therapist, and a resource counselor and discipleship leader at the Victory Christian Fellowship - Every Nation Churches and Ministries.
Mrs. Castillo discussed some of the most common challenges that people faced in online education and gave tips to parents in adapting to online education. "Having difficulty in changing your actions or approaches in doing things to suit this situation is an adaptability struggle." She said, "Sino ba ang hindi nag-a-adjust ngayon?"
Adjusting from the physical classroom settings to the digital online settings is not easy. The role of the parents has increased because during this state, they are the children's teachers as well. Children are not the only ones struggling, parents of the children are also trying their best to cope with the current state.
Mrs. Castillo also said that the state of mind of the parents could also affect the children's condition. To spread a positive outlook, one must focus on the favorable deed no matter how little it might be. Taking breaks can also serve to make room for relaxation. And by fixing a routine, it helps both the parents and the children to manage the tasks and to have control over themselves. She ended the talk with a quote saying, "No one can beat a father and a mother's love."
The first virtual parent-teacher conference (PTC) was conducted on the morning of November 28.
