MARCOS PRESENTS PAPER IN INTERNATIONAL CONFAB
by Mary Ann Co (11A - HUMSS) | August 7, 2021
Batch 2021 graduate Hiraya Marcos, accompanied by her research adviser Mr. Roberto Lim Jr., presented a research paper at the 5th KANITA International Conference on Gender Studies (KICGS 2021) held last July 28-29, 2021.
Marcos is the first SHS researcher from PCC to present abroad. Her paper, entitled Examining Hesitation and Empowerment in the Coming Out Narrations by Chinese Filipino LGBTQIA+, was presented on the first day of the conference. This paper stemmed from her HUMSS research project entitled Wearing Cut Sleeves: Unpacking Narratives of Coming Out by Chinese Filipino LGBTQIA+, which was awarded the Best Research Paper for the said strand last May 2021. She posits in her presented paper the well-entrenched nature of hesitation and empowerment in the stories of Chinese Filipino LGBTQIA+ individuals about their coming out processes.
Her study concluded that such coming out narratives are unique, but at the same time collective. Moreover, she asserts that conflations of culture, identity, and tradition seem to encompass these stories of coming out, and that the process of coming out is an intensely social process.
KICGS 2021 is a biennial conference that focuses on gender and women’s studies. It has been organized by the University Sains Malaysia in Penang since 2012. Due to the travel and gathering restrictions in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the said conference was conducted online. KICGS utilizes the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework to address and support gender equality and social justice in the participants' research and advocacies.
